I believe that you can only save files in the formats specified in section
6.2.2.3.1 of the doc.
jpeg and gif aren't among them.

I prefer to have my files in PNG format.
To do this, I changed povray.ini to read:

    Output_File_Type=N
    Output_File_Name=pov.png
