I've written a patch to POV-Ray that can provide the extent of the
bounding box of any #declared object to a POV script.  Just unzip the
attached file and follow the instructions in bound.doc.

One thing this is exceptionally useful for is manipulating TrueType
text objects, for which bounding information has heretofore been
difficult to get.
