Is there a way in Pov-Ray for Windows to have the render window appear
(gradually from top to bottom) over the previous render (at least when they both
have the same resolution)? The default behavior is that, when you hit render,
the previous render window (if open) disappears and the new one starts to appear
over an empty image (actually a checker pattern).

It would sometimes be very useful if the new render would appear over the
previous render so that one could more easily, and on the fly, observe changes
in the image. I think this would also make things like tracking the camera
movement at least a bit easier when searching for the best location for the
camera.

No. At least, not for single scenes.

When you have an animation, the previous frame is not cleared when the
new one starts.
This may be used to do something somewhat similar to what you describe.

You make your scene.
Start the render as an animation.
During the render, you do some editing or changes to the scene. Do NOT
save during the parse phase, in some cases it /may/ cause some fatal error.
You must finish doing your changes and save before the next frame start
rendering.

Thanks. That's too bad, I hope someone capable could implement it. Just out of
curiosity, do you think such a thing would be hard to do? I might try the
animation trick, but for most test renders it's not that useful if I have to
make the changes before the render is done, I'm not that fast.

Actually better yet if one could toggle between the last two renders (or the
last n renders).

Why not just save them to separate files? Open a windows "preview" window on
it, and use the arrow keys to toggle back and forth? (Assuming you're using
Windows here, of course.)

Sure. I was just thinking of a simpler and perhaps a faster way of doing that
without ever leaving the editor. My guess is that it would also help new users,
encouraging them to play with different settings.
Having the previous render as a reference makes it easier to get a better sense
of what actually changed in the picture - this much seem obvious. The more I
think about it the more obvious it seems to me that there should be button for
this in the editor.

But off course what seems simple to some might seem unnecessary to others.
Paraphrasing Occam one might take the view that "buttons must not be multiplied
beyond necessity".

By the way is this "peek" option available in Vista or XP? I know Windows 7 has
it. At the moment I use Vista, but I newer use the Aero-theme or whatever it's
called because it slows thing down.

I meant the preview window that you get when you just right-click an image
and pick "preview". Apparently MS calls it the "picture and fax viewer". The
built-in thing that lets you start a slide show. Save each picture to a
successive name and arrow back and forth.

You must have an old old graphics card to notice being slowed down by
compositing windows. :-)

Old graphic card like what? AGP 1x? Older PCI card? Integrated video
with shared memory? Wrong video drivers? NOT having hardware
acceleration enabled?

I just hate the picture and fax viewer. It's quite heavy and slow to
start, it takes a long time to load and display any image, and I don't
like the interface.

I use IrfanView instead. Free for personal use, lightweight, load and
display images in about any format in a snap, simple, sober interface.
