I am confused, I have the impression in some POV RAY version there was the
possibility to execute an app before/after run. The functionality is in menus
and the sandbox model too, but besides closing down the program there seems to
be no option or am I wrong? It is quite typical in IDE environments, so that is
why I may be confused with this version. I know techniques to synchronize with
custom made apps, but executing code after Run would be the best way to extend
functionality in my case. Consider this a petition for a further version! I
think it would be easy to provide a build with the ability to execute arbitrary
code before/after the Run and similar commands. Specifically, I want to backup
script/image pairs after each run. There may be some way to implement it with
animation code and strings, but an external utility would be more flexible. If I
had the time I would write a DLL, but examples seem quite complex and little
documented just to add a postcommand. I think a middle build with such
functionality would be quite adequate and easy to distribute for people who have
the source code installed and compiling.

Have a look at the Post_Scene_Command option in the INI file.

Also, for clarities sake, it is advisable not to include
all your thoughts about an issue when making the first post
about it ;)

No Post_Scene_Command in any INI in my 3.6.1c.icl8.win32 version. POV RAY is set
to check for new versions but there has been no activity since 2008. Only
additional installation has been Moray.

What Christian means is that you should have a look at the documentation
on the Post_Scene_Command INI setting.

And got a beautiful 9x% Complete... this program is not responding. But I am
playing hard: I tried telling the command line to Post_Scene_Command=typical
Windows app in the bar edit box. Do I use escape slashes or quotes or none?

Basically it is not a clean solution to have such command in (some ini) but have
it (also?) at the IDE-Shell level. Do I have the impression somebody is
protecting the documentation _as is_ so much without realizing a rewriting and
update would be funny and welcomed? Or do you recommend some buyable book? |D

Neither; but we happily recommend to volunteer for the vacant position
of Rewriter Of The Docs :-P

WHAT!? So more experimentation to make the Post_Scene_Command= documentation
work? Then go and rewrite the docs. What about the original programmers hiring a
rewritting team since it is them who know all hidden assumptions and rationales?
But since software is given at dumping prizes...

As you may have noticed, no money is charged for the development,
distribution, or service of POV-Ray, so there is no budget to hire even
a single professional documentation (re-)writer, let alone a team. Just
like with the development of the software /per se/, documentation
therefore depends on volunteers. As does development and maintenance,
sample scenes, platform ports, project websites, and other fancy stuff
enthusiastic software developers tend to be less enthusiastic about...

Post_Scene_Command= is simply NOT WORKING. It is in an INI file, tried
combinations quotes/escapes, menu options (should be free to run anything),
combinations of pre and post and abort/fatal commands, but POV RAY displays
POV-Ray is executing another process.... _TWICE_, and hangs. The image window
says it is just about to complete, between 92% and 99% and stops. I am just
trying to open the notepad.exe for now and the command works well from the start
button Run... The message window should display only ONE executing message but
it tries to execute twice, the first seemingly OK or ignored. Also tried all
ISAQUF combinations... I d like to have this command working before adding
animation and frame options or even write any utility.

I suggest trying it with a .BAT file first, something simple like

echo "Kilroy was here!" >> test.txt

Notepad.exe /may/ be problematic because it doesn't auto-close.
As for the stuff being run twice, that might be nothing more than a
duplicate message. If all is well, you should see just one line in test.txt.
