So, I was just tooling around on my Win XP box (reading slashdot, if you
must know :) ) and suddenly ZoneAlarm pops up an alert. (ZoneAlarm is a
free personal firewall that is tops in my book.) It asks whether the
program "pvengine.exe" should be allowed to access the Internet.

I refused, because my policy is to block any program whose need to go onto
the Net is less than clear to me. And this one is. Why is pvengine.exe
asking to access the Internet? Or is some other program spoofing me and
trying to sneak by?

Didn't you already give approval for povray to do that. If it's doing
that, you or whoever installed povray 3.5 onto your system approved the
option of having povray check for new versions on the internet. There
was a whole screen for that option in the install, so you must have seen
it. But the default is yes so you must have not seen it and just
clicked through it. It can be turned off in the menus somewhere.

Please refer to section 1.10.8.2.3 of the manual for more details.

When you installed POV-Ray, you answered "yes" to the question whether
POV-Ray could connect the internet periodically. Now you are answering "no".

Perhaps you should read what the installation programs say to you?

There shouldn't be any problem allowing POV-Ray to access the internet, if
you trust the pov-team. It checks for updates once a week, and I think that
the first time sends some information about your hardware for purely
statistical purposes.

You know, usually I am good about reading through those things. I can only
blame my epic struggle to get Win XP to recognize me.

Thanks to everyone who wrote back.
I'll go back to being a _quiet_ idiot now.

Why should you? You had a problem, asked a question, got an answer,
solved your problem. That's the spirit.

Peter is right. There are no stupid questions, and that's not just
mumbo-jumbo. If you don't know something, you should be able to ask for
help.
Even if I sometimes might sound a bit sarcastic (and I apologize for that),
I'm still glad to help people. :)
