Hmm, thanks, it looks enticing and helpful.

Humm, I will give that a try after next reboot.

Isn't it possible to disable your virusscanner without rebooting? I do it
all the time.

Yes it is.

One thing I know for sure is that on a fresh boot, after windows has
finished scratching and has become calm, if I start POV it takes 2 minutes
to load.

So I will disable AV and try loading POV to see if it has any impact.

Good idea!

Thanks

You can check this too:
1) You can type CHKDSK /F, on Start->Run... if asked (Y/N) type Y, if
you suspect from HD hardware failure add an /R to the the command
line to check the entire surface of the disk, reboot to see if your file
system is OK.
2) At least Service Pack 2 has to be installed of your Windows 2000, i
recommend you install the latest, Service Pack 4, from Microsoft.com, is
about 128.8 MB. This could improve your system speed.
3) Check for virus. Extra disk activity on all files of your PC can be
caused by a virus infection, Make sure your anti virus is up to date and
to make sure you can check your HD on a virus-free system, sometimes
when you have a virus the AV can't get it out from the system.
4) Erase temporary files, from Internet Browser(s) and Windows 2000,
then, if you can, Defrag it.
5) Get a good Disk Cache Utility, i'm using CacheBoost 4 Professional
and it has improved my Windows 2000 performance, you can Download the
Enterprise version if you have HEAVY WORKLOADS at
http://www.systweak.com/ or at
http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=cacheboost&tg=dl-2001&search=+Go%21+.

This program also optimizes usage of memory, defrags it, and unloads
unnecessary assigned memory and you have fine tune options from Tune
Windows button.

If none of this help, call tech support and have your system check.
God bless you and help you solve your problem.
Best Regards.

Saul

Thanks for your suggestions, but all these steps are not needed as they
are always taken care of or up to date.

I will look into your cache utility though...

The actual problem seems to be norton anti-virus.

Thanks

Marc

Hello again, it occurred to me that could be this too:<br>
<br>
1) Another cause of delay could be that you have a FAT32 File System as
your C: partition, and you have installed Office 95, 97 or 2000, the
problem is those versions Installs a Indexing program (You can see it
in the control panel, as an icon which shows a yellow ray in front of a
pair of black binoculars, its name is FastFind), it indexes ALL files
on your FAT32 partitions, to access files quickly, BUT to do so, it has
to index the files which takes a lot of time and work for the PC and
specially from the disk, this causes retard on all operations that
require disk access including loading Windows and programs, this index
is a few megs (4-6 MB) in size but it has to be loaded to memory so
this also takes time, this is maybe the cause that you feel a little
delay when you load POV-Ray for the first time. Note that this index is
constantly being updated by its memory resident creator, plus, if
windows unloads it and/or swaps it to to the page file it has to be
re-read it, that's why POV-Ray does not load fast when you reload it
after a long while. Said all this you should disable the program by
loading the Control Panel applet and select on the File menu "Close and
Stop", TWICE (is a Microsoft Program), and delete all the indexes..<br>
<br>
2) To avoid this and to have a more secure and fast partition you can
converted it to NTFS File System, the default File System of Windows
2000/XP, with the following text typed on Start->Run... : <code><b>convert</b>
<i>C</i>: <b>/fs:ntfs</b><big><font face="Times New Roman">, and
follow the instructions.<br>
<br>
Good luck.<br>

You should not post HTML-only messages to non-binaries groups (like this
one). (In fact, it's not wise to post any HTML at all to these groups.)

I think that I should warn you : when windows (98, XP or anyone else)
doesn't start, I use the Knoppix distribution (runable on a CD) on the
"sick" PC in order to connect it to another (like a laptop) ; the online
requirements are :
- CD ROM drive, and a BIOS able to boot on it
- a recognized ethernet card
- a LAN cable
And I'm able to cut/copy/delete/edit all the files I want.
BUT the hard disk must be working with a FAT32 to be automatically
configured.

That's why I don't convert my FAT to NTFS.

Bye

When the start-up of a program seems too slow, I think of a lack of RAM.
You can have a look through the registry :
...\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
to find the programs loaded at start-up. Sometimes you find programs
that are loaded without your knowing it and you can clean it if they are
not meant to be run.

Best regards.

PS : Dialog in French possible if you are French-speaking, Marc
