As some of you may already know, I saw Tangerine Dream live at the Royal 
Albert Hall yesterday.

It wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped. I couldn't really hear much in 
the way of music, just booming drumbeats and baselines. Almost 
everything else was lost in a mash of echos and tinitus. Very disappointing.

I'm not sure if I was just sitting in the wrong place or whether the 
performance was actually that bad. The crowd went wild for it, but then 
I'm sure crowds went wild for Star Wars I...

Well, 90% of live events, be it sporting or performance arts, suck, period,
unless you get your enjoyment from crowds and the "ambiance". The other 10%
are tolerable if you are rich or lucky enough to get decent seating.

Just last night, I remarked at how deft "the crowd" at Youtube must have been to
give so many thumbs-up votes to a Morrissey live concert video. The song
probably had well-written lyrics, but lyrics indistinguishable in the horrible
audio quality of the live performance.

Funny, I've never heard anybody else say a bad word about the acoustics. 
(Then again, I haven't met many people who's actually been there.) Also, 
I've been to a fair few orchestral events and not noticed a problem.

I guess either I was sitting in the wrong place, or they had their PA 
system set up badly...

Also, I now know what a grand piano being flailed by a cat o' nine tails 
sounds like. o_O I have literally no idea why they did that.

It's just the warmup. A girl comes out dressed in the least practical 
dress *ever*. It was made of transparent plastic and covered with fairy 
lights. She had to have a guy in a black suit follow her feeding all the 
cables along, and help her sit down at the piano. Then she sits there 
playing the piano for a while. Then this weird guy in a cowboy hat comes 
out and strokes her hair. Then he goes and stands leaning on the piano. 
And then he suddenly pulls this cat o' nine tails out of his jacket and 
flogs the piano to bits.

Then the girl gets up and leaves, some stage hands whisk the piano away, 
and Tangerine Dream start playing their stuff. Like, WTF was *that* all 
about?! I have no idea.

I did recognise some of the stuff they played, but as I say, I couldn't 
really hear very well. Almost everything came out as a loud bass boom.

The auditorium is like being inside a big kettledrum. That is why those 
silly mushroom things were put on the roof.
