J-drama that's sort of like My So-Called Life theme-wise, and comes across
visually much better than other J-dramas I've seen (they tend to have sort
of a...well it's like the difference between watching a British show vs. a
US one. I can't really think of how to describe it...the edges of things
aren't as harsh...? ah well). Thumbs up!

And if Warp happens to read this, I still don't get how anybody'd like
PreCure, but check out Shugo Chara, you might enjoy that, too. XD

Looking at the cover image, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Syugo_anime.jpg
I think it surpasses a critical limit of "shoujoness".

Pfff, that's just promo art. It's really great! Plays against a lot of
mahou shoujo stereotypes for humour (but then, most mahou shoujo anime do,
to a greater or lesser extent). I'd think if you can stomach PreCure,
nothing'd be 'too shoujo'. ;)

It seems that they dare to break established formulas and try to make
something a bit different and interesting. For example, the typical
monster-of-the-week formula is mostly avoided, as well as the cliche
pair-of-magical-girls (or, in some case, quintet). They also dare to cross
gender boundaries and have some "magical boys" as well, although only in
secondary roles.
