Actually, thinking about it... Warp works in game development. I bet he
comes across all kinds of hopeless people who think they know how to
develop games. (Or that ask him to develop games for them, or...)

Heh. "If the companion cube *does* speak, Aperture Science recommends
you disregard its advice."

I think that's being harsh. For that kind of site, Slashdot has the
best quality of comments that I've seen. Sites like Digg and Reddit pale
in that regard.

We have this club, with which we keep max. week-long camps for
youngsters (usually 'bout 10-16 years old) to learn IT-skills. At first
night we ask them what they want to learn (programming, raytracing,
networking, hardware, Linux etc...). Some years ago for couple of
summers there was always 2-3 new kids, who had no idea of programming
and they answered like "I want to learn how to code something like Doom"
(Doom being an actual part of these answer - and surely the most popular!).

Oh, that's cute. (How many million LoC is Doom? Sure, it does software
rendering, but even so...) ;-)
My response is typically of the form "learning how to program a computer
is like learning to speak French. It takes more than 5 minutes..."

Well, yes, it does vary from story to story - but I also read unfiltered,
if I filtered them so I saw the interesting/insightful comments
primarily, that probably would make a difference.
I always remember the types of responses Nat Friedman or Miguel de Icaza
end up getting after putting in their 2c. The people writing to them are
*usually* not very nice.

And useful - we make a couple of new nerds every year ;). Just try to
guess what I started doing every summer when I was 10 years old (missed
1 year so far, I'm 26 now).

For the record, I have actually no idea.

We just teach them to program. Pretty soon they'll notice it's not
*that* easy, but some of them get into programming and continue it :).

Yeah, like me :P Well yeah, I guess I would have become a nerd anyways,
but still, that's the place where I first learnt raytracing ;)

Programming is a lot easier than learning French... At least if you ask me.

And Linux ;). Possibly programming also?

I can agree. I know some programming, but no French.
