beatpick.com is pretty cool.
There are several sites out there offering tracks under creative commons
licensing and a pay-as-you-like model. I had spent hours poring over the
catalog of a few of them and too much of the music sounded like a nerd in
his basement trying to be annoying for 8 minutes. In the electronica
sections, nothing was happening thematically.
At beatpick, it was easy to stumble across stuff that I could easily imagine
making the backpiece for an interesting animation. Sort of like music
written by a geek that was also into extreme sports.
Disclaimer: uh, nothing to disclose.

I just looked at the licensing calculator for some of the music.

Under "Chilled and Orchestral", I selected a licensing option for motion picture
production, with no music in the credits, music for the background or source,
and less than 50k euros for the film budget.

For worldwide distribution rights, you're looking at $1600 US. For "art house"
rights, you're going to pay $60 US. I wonder what would the TC-RTC fall under.

Didn't listen to any of the music (MP3s and such are verboten on our network).

I think I'll stick to doing my own soundtracks. More fun that way :)
