I installed the full 3.6.1 version of Pov-ray from the main page. Now what am I
supposed to do with this beta 25 directory to get it to work? I tried copying
the contents to the bin directory but that didn't work. I would like this
version for SMP support since I'm using a quad core. Thanks for the help in
advance.

The beta test is to benefit developers find problems, which requires
experienced users testing the software. If you are a new users to POV-Ray,
you should start with the latest release and not some beta version!

1) exit POV
2) backup the 3.6 files in the pov\bin (make a subdirectory and copy them)
3) unzip beta files into a subdirectory of pov\bin
4) copy all the .pov, .txt, .ini, .jpg files from the beta to the pov\bin
5) copy the appropriate .dll and .exe files for your platform to the
pov/bin (probably pvengine64.exe, povcmax64.dll, and cmedit64.dll)
6) remove the files from the pov\bin for the wrong platform
(probably pvengine32.exe povcmax32.dll, and cmedit32.dll)
7) copy pvtools.ini from pov\ini to C:\Documents and Settings\
user\Application Data\POV-Ray for Windows\
8) run POV
9) reverse process to revert to 3.6 if a scene doesn't render right (it's a
beta)
*On Vista POV should not be installed to the C:\Program Files\pov directory,
which was the default for XP. Vista limits the use of .ini files and ignores
proper requests to read and edit .ini files for programs installed there.

The betas are not for new users, but...
Create a new subfolder in the bin folder.
Extract or move the files for the beta version there.
Create a shortcut to the beta executable.
This way, you have access to the release and the beta version.

I tried all the suggestions mentioned above and nothing seems to work for me.
When I install 3.6.1, it works perfectly, but when I install any of the beta
stuff, nothing runs. I run the beta executable and I get the hourglass for a
brief second and then nothing. Not even a process that spawns while I'm
looking at the task manager. If anyone has any other thoughts or ideas I would
love to hear them. My specs are as follows:
Windows XP SP2 with all updates
Intel Core 2 Quad running at 3.5GHz
4GB DDR2-1095 (3.25GB recognized in WinXp)
Abit IP35 Pro MoBo
XFX 8800GT w/512MB
Seagate 250GB x 2 in RAID 0
Thanks everyone for the input so far. I appreciate it.

You might need the 32 bit version for XP.
You should remove the wrong versions from the
pov\bin, having them there can make POV hang.
Here's the 32 bit files I have in pov\bin with
XP Pro SP2, on a 32 bit Athlon
povupdate.dll
povupdate32.dll
povcmax32.dll
povcmax2.dll
cmedit.dll
cmedit32.dll
pvengine.exe
POV-Ray.Scene-XP.ico
POV-Ray.Scene.ico
POV-Ray.Include-XP.ico
POV-Ray.Include.ico

The most simple way is to create a new directory/folder - alongside the 3.6
directory/folder - in which you unzip the content of the beta. Check "use
folder name" if you use WinZip.
Now the only thing you need to do is start one of the pvengine exe files...
