Hi!

A friend of mine claims that Bryce is the one and only 3D program to use...
I have never used Bryce myself, only POV Ray, and would like to ask some
more experienced users here for some more info on Bryce, e.g. comapred to
POV Ray...? Is POV the winner :-) ?

/Janne

In short yes POV is the winner.

Bryce is good on landscapes and atmospheric scenes, but falls down in many
areas, and View'd Esprite (sp?), is probably much better on landscapes.

You can create a nice looking scene quickly with Bryce but it lacks the
power and controle of the likes of POV. I personally found the interface
very confusing, and have heard others say the same.

Others may be able to give you a more up to date opinion on Bryce, it's some
time since I've used it.

I have to play a Devil's advocate here, but some of the stuff the best Bryce
users turn out is truly amazing. See:
http://www.DigitalRen.com/master/kano/kano.html
http://www.lls.se/~ternald/websid2.html

I guess it takes a lot of work and dedication to get there, but Povray is no
piece of cake either. To get the best out of Povray, it's preferable to be at
ease with programming, something truly appalling for many people.
From my own forays with Bryce, I'd say that it's more limited than Povray (and
particularly than Megapov) in many aspects, but one can obtain - within these
limitations - extremely good results in a relatively short time.

Well, the people who write POV-Ray didn't go broke...

Any program in the hands of someone with talent and patience will produce
great images. But for me Pov is the one because of it's flexibility.

For some reason (although I don't wonder why...) price is never an issue
when people discuss about which renderer is better.
An attitude like "why do you use POV-Ray when this or that hypersuper
high-end renderer is much better" shows clearly that the person has a
pirate version of that program.
As the obvious answer is "because that high-end program costs more than
my 4-month paycheck and I just can't afford it" and usually the other person
is also someone who couldn't afford it, it's quite clear what is the
situation.
Piracy seems to be so common that this doesn't even come to their minds
when they ask the question. They just assume that also you use pirated
programs as naturally as they do.
In my opinion those kind of people are a big bunch of losers (sorry if
I offended anyone, but that's just my opinion).

When someone asks me this question in real life, I always answer in the
same way: "Well, give me the money and I'll buy the program and start using
it." That's usually enough to shut them up.

And besides, POV-Ray *IS* better than many of those expensive programs.
