I downloaded it again, installed, tried skyvase.pov, and...it still
doesn't work. No sign of the memory cache. Has this version been tested
under OS 8.6? I don't see how that could be a problem, though.

Actually, it has been developed under 8.6 which I am running all the time
:-)

Well, as far I can see it's the only difference between our systems. I
have
a Power Mac G3 with OS 8.1.

Well, I looked at the resource fork with ResEdit, and failed to find any
sign of the memory cache. It is as if my version is a modified earlier
version with a different version number(3.1g.r1).(of course, I may
easily have just overlooked it...) Oh, well, I guess I will just wait
until the source is released or until 3.5. :-(

There never was one (on the povray.org server). The memory cache settings
can be found in the DITL resource 2100. If it is not in there, perhaps you
can e-mail me your POV-Ray application (to fro### [at] charliecnsiitedu
please).

You are completely right. There is a wrong PPC 3.1g.r1 version up. Three
days after I had uploaded the PPC version _with_ memory cache, Eduard
uploaded the 68K 3.1g.r1 version and "new" PPC 3.1g.r1 archives due to a
misunderstanding. Now we have a total mess, of course. Sorry!!! There will
be the original, right PPC 3.1g.r1 up in a few days.

The easiest way would probably be to look under Application
preferences:General, if there is a control for the cache, then you have
the right version.

That is correct.
The fixed update archive is up now at mac.povray.org.

I'm very sorry but when I wrote that I had no problem when downloading pov-ray
what I really did was to download the file and to check the version using the
Get Info (finder file menu). I didn't run the application. So my message wasn't
exact, on the contrary, it was confusing. Sorry again
