Quicktime Problem when using the Ray Tracing CD (Message 1 to 8 of 8)

Well, I finally decided that I needed to lay Bryce aside and really learn
POV-Ray! The right way.

When I try to run the POV-Ray Reference / Ray Tracing CD Intro that is on
the CD, I get a message box that says that I must have an older version of
Quicktime, and that I need to load version 1.6.1.

However, I am using OS 8.6 and QT 4.0 (non-beta). Are there any patches or
upgrades for the Reference out there that will allow me to use the app?

thanks,

trav

Glenn, what version of POV are you using? Sounds like POV might be the thing
that needs upgrading.

Nope, it isn't POV-Ray. He is refering to an older book by Eduard which has
a HyperCard reference (for 2.x) and that is not compatible with newer
QuickTime versions.

I just searched my POV-Ray 2.2 CD ( Waite Group, 1994 ) and found nothing with
that name and no Hypercard files on it.

I could probably open it under an older system (I have several old system folders
on Zips) and save it in PDF if it hasn't already been republished.

I don't have Eduard's book so I can't tell you where it is, but Eduard
responded to him by e-mail (he also send his question to
mac### [at] povrayorg) and here is what Eduard said:

>>>
Hi,
I am the author of the book you are asking about. The Reference
application that a contractor wrote to go along with my book (in
Hypercard) was not very well written, and really does expect an old
version of QuickTime in order to work. This is too bad, because the
reference application is actually pretty useful when it works. You
should try saving your Quicktime 4 extensions (use extension mgr to
disable them), and then install QT 1.6.1 from the book's CD and see
if that will work. If not, you may be out of luck, that book and
software are now over 6 years old, and out of print. Sorry I can't
be of much more help.

ttfn,
Eduard

Hi all, trav here.

yes, Eduard most kindly took the time to answer me.

Regarding the CD (that was included in Eduard's book that I bought way back
in ought and 94 or maybe ought and 95), when you open the CD, you should see
a treasure chest icon titled:

 Ray Tracing CD Intro

and over and below it, another large question mark shaped icon titled:

POV-Ray Reference

both of which are Kind = Application Program. Evidently Hypercard stand
alones or something like that. I had hoped against hope that I would not
have to try the install the QT that was on the disk and do an extension swap
out, but hopefully, that will be easier using the Extension Manager. I am
sure that it will not work out to be so easy, but who knows ;-).

Regardless, thank all of you for taking the time to share your insights and
offer your help to me. If you are interested, I'll let you know if I get it
to working again and what it took (possible FAQ material ?); the books makes
several references to the Reference application in the opening chapters,
which was the driving force behind me asking the question.

I just wish that Eduard was still getting royalties on his fine book; who
knows, maybe it could have lead to a second edition.

YES!
It worked!! I first placed the QT 1.6.1 in the disabled extensions folder.
Then I used the extensions manager edit option to restart with all
extensions off and then made a POV set that contained a few extensions and
now, the apps are working great! There is only one problem so far. For
some reason, the Mac defaults to the version of QT that is in use,
regardless of what extension manager set is selected for use; which requires
me re-selecting QT 1.6.1 or QT 4.0 and restarting. I am sure that one of
your brainy people knows why that is. I did notice that even a restart with
all off results in a QT extension selected.??

This is perfectly normal. QuickTime installs itself "into" (sorry, I don't
have a better non-technical term) the System at boot time. I am afraid you
will have to reboot to switch. Oh, and i have to say that it is indeed
very interesting to see that QuickTime 1.6.1 still runs under Mac OS 8.6.
It shows what great engineering job Apple is doing! :-)
