I remember playing around with a pov scene several years ago (it might have been
included in a Unix source distribution). The scene included a watch, a ruler, an
open math book... it was a sort of time and space allegory. I searched
the web but couldn't find it. I would be grateful if anyone could provide me
with a pointer to the source file. Thank you.

For the life of me I can't remember the name of that scene or who made
it, but I was able to at least find the image. Maybe somebody else here
can fill in the other details.

On that site it says it was an image taken from the POV-Ray site, and I
also seem to remember this image... I think it was displayed on the old Hall
of Fame, but I don't know for sure. I don't think it was included with any
version of POV-Ray, but perhaps it was included on some book from that time...

After some more Google Fu I was able to dig up a bit more on it.

The image is titled "Pocketwatch" is is by Kevin Odhner

It was apparently published in a book: http://www.prenhall.com/capron/

It was indeed in the Povray hall of fame at one point

There was some mention alluding to it in the IRTC sometime before the
August 1995 round, but I've been unable to actually verify this or
determine *which* round it was in. So it's most likely that it was just
put into the hall of fame before this date but not actually in the IRTC.

Here's the initial hall of fame info on it:
http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/graphics/raytracing/povray/Hall-Of-Fame/pcktwtch.txt

That's about all I can figure out, but it enough that I'm at least a bit
satisfied. It was also a blast looking through the old IRTC rounds,
particularly the 1994-1995 ones.

Kevin, Jaime, you put me on the right track, here it is... 1997-09-24
ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/pub/soft/graphics/povray/Hall-Of-Fame/pcktwtch.zip

I am not into raytracing really, but I remember compiling POV on that Unix
System V Olivetti box, http://www.storiaolivetti.it/upload/lsx_5030.jpg and
being really impressed as the scene was rendered, it took a while... kudos to
JK Odhner! and thanks to both of you.

Funny you were looking for that same scene. A few weeks ago I started playing
with the POV 3.7 (supports multi-threading on multi cores) and I have had a
copy of the Pocketwatch. Last night and tonight I spent a couple of hours and
brought the Scene Description op to date. Most of the issues were with the way
colors and other properties were assigned in Textures. If Interested I can post
an updated version.

Another note, performance. A note in the earlier post says it took 40 hours
(144,000 seconds), on my machine 330 Seconds. For a 440x speed-up.

I am running
Core i7 920
Asus P6T
6 Gb Ram, 2Gx3|OCZ OCZ3P1600LV6GK
10K Western Digital Raptor
