Examining the crackle pattern, it looks like there are two overlapping networks
of cracks. Is there a way to make it so that there is only one layer?

I hope I am being clear.

Well I'll confess it's not clear to me. When I render the following scene I
don't see anything that fits the description of "two overlapping networks of
cracks":

camera {location <0,0,-8> look_at 0 }
light_source {<-10,20,-50>, rgb 1}
plane {-z,0 pigment {crackle}}

Are you able to clarify what you mean?

Regards,
Chris B.

Duh, the problem was that I was using transmit in the pigment and was looking
through to the other side of the sphere. nevermind.
