Do we have the original pov scene for the initial image ?
(Or did I missed something in thinking that the "contest" is about
making a banner with "Persistence of Vision" string ?)
Wouldn't a variation of the benchmark scene miss the goal ?
(ouch, kind of double negative question... )
I enjoyed lately the easter-egg with painted pattern, it might be a nice
replacement for the O of vision (there is already a sphere in the P with
the logo, so it can get replaced), See Jim Holsenback 20/03/2011.
One I from vision (1st ?) could get a replacement by a candle (would it
integrate well ? See Bruno Cabasson 18/2/2011 post) with SSLT/...
One other letter could get replaced by some collection of grains ?
(Samuel Benge).. or it could be the horizontal line : replaced with a
dry-stone wall with a bit more vertical dimensions (and variation of the
grains size along the wall)

exactly the kind of thing I was thinking about ... spelling out povray
with shapes, kind of a stylized letter approach. also want to work the
tag-line "Persistence of Vision" as flat text (object pattern or
something like that) as part of the background or ground plane ... oh
and I'm going to buck tradition here a request no checkered planes

cool ... I rather liked the brick idea that came out of discussion's
about the scene Thomas is working on. This sounds like it could indeed
be some fun kicking a few ideas around and seeing where it goes!

another idea ... theme based (steam, fantasy, space, tech, any others? ...)
besides the stylized fonts for the word povray ... the tag-line
"Persistence of Vision" (diff from the povray object(s)) these two
elements should have a "world" built around them.

I like all those.
How about something like a science experiment with a light beam split by
glass lettering of the words.

Or for the tradition line, a look at the Maian.ttf (or Maiandb.tff ?)
with a bit of belleved text macro...

I'm concerned that the final result would be some sort of Frankenstein's
Monster, where all kinds of features get crammed into one image...
Unobtrusive elegant lighting with an area_illuminating area light +
radiosity + photons and/or SSLT would like nice.

How about a scene (not necessarily something that would replace the logo,
but ought to have the logo in it somewhere) that clearly showcases *all* the
new (visible) features in pov3.7?

Yes.
An art gallery usually has a variety of themes and styles all in one
gallery. So how about an art gallery with sculptures depicting each
letter. Each sculpture can showcase a feature. Something like Salvador
Dali's stuff would be nice.

I am thinking about a Renaissance-like painting, or maybe surrealistic:
landscape with the letters as huge buildings of sort.... Piranesi too comes
to mind...
