It is time to remove the links to Geocities on www.povray.org since the site
is dead, gone and buried. There are plenty links on the resources-page that
now point into the great void.

The source for the links collection has been posted here:
http://wiki.povray.org/content/Knowledgebase:POV-Ray_Links_Collection

There are several people working on the files that were there and some other
housekeeping issues as well. I haven't seen any activity with that lately,
however I was looking for something the other day and found a stale link in
that list. After a bit of investigation that led nowhere I decided to just
delete it.

So the process to make changes to the links collection is in place, minus
the code to get the deltas from the Wiki back to the Main site.

Jim

Also, I noticed today that the POV-Tree page no longer seems
to exist. That is certainly a tool which should not get lost.
I was still able to get a copy by entering the old URL

   http://propro.ru/go/Wshop/povtree/download.html

into the Internet Archive at

   http://www.archive.org/index.php

I didn't know until now that someone backs up the internet ;)

I *swear* I was able to access versions of my old website dating back to
before ~2002, complete with subpages and many images. But I am no longer
able to. Does IA delete archives?

I've just updated a small number of links where I've found new sites for
stuff as part of the exercise that I was doing recovering Geocities objects
for the Object Collection. I don't know if Sabrina ever managed to get a
copy of any sites online on a public web site.

Chris B.

There are probably hundreds of links in the collection that are now dead and
obsolete. It was hard keeping the links active and up to date, even when I
actively maintaining them, but the collection hasn't had any real work done
to it in years. I'm sure interests have also changed and the whole
collection should be trimmed down and started over.

Is there any automated URI checking?
Are the items listed organized data? (i.e., in a database)

Might be fun to build that (or fint tune an existing one).

When I was building and maintiaining the link collection for povray.org I
had a couple of freeware applications that I used for checking link
integrity. That was sooooo long ago I've since forgotten what I was using.
I'm sure similar applications are still available. The collection was
originally built off my personal bookmarks in Netscape and Chris Cason used
my bookmarks to build the page for the povray.org site.
