I have an idea for a new project:

We could get together and improve POV-Ray renderings on Wikimedia
Commons for images whose source code is listed on their pages. Improving
the images so that they look real sharp using radiosity and other
advanced cool techniques might draw a lot of attention to POV-Ray.

I would be happy to dedicate compute cycles to that. :-) I have a pretty
hefty machine that sits idle a lot.

I ordered stamps from Zazzle that read "Place Stamp Here".

ditto - my Linux AMD quad isn't busy round the clock either.

But I guess Shark was also calling for people willing to polish up the
source files.

Yep, that's what I meant.

BTW, I spent several hours last night Googling, and added several
hundred images to the "Created with..." category on Wikimedia Commons.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Created_with_Persistence_of_Vision

I haven't determined yet which images have source code attached to them.
But, at least it's a start.

Also, we should probably pick the ugliest ones and start with those.
IMO, the chemistry and moleculular images are all very nice to begin
with, so they probably can be skipped. (They also require other software.)

The polyhedra images are functional, but look like they just as well
could have been created using a Java app.

The astronomy images with the black backgrounds seem confusing and
cluttered to me, but I can't tell you specifically what would need to be
done in order to improve them.

Here are the scenes I've updated so far:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pyramid_of_35_spheres_animation_original.gif
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Truncated_octahedra.jpg
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rhombic_dodecahedra.jpg

I've got one more planned for the immediate future that's by the same
author as the first image.

Note that you may have to navigate to the files directly, as it takes
time for the server to update thumbnails and so forth.

I rerendered this file:

File:Pentatope of 70 spheres animation original.gif

And added about 100 more images to the "Created with Persistence of
Vision" category, bringing the total to 640.

Regarding
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pyramid_of_35_spheres_animation_original.gif

I liked the old one better.
Your new one got a blue background, miss actual colored shadow on
ground, lack display of the colors of each layer (green, blue, yellow,
red, grey), is rendered for a square picture (512) dispite the more
traditional contexte of 4:3 picture (the white/marble ground is an
important context to see ), and your rotating speed is too high.
Light is overpresent, no compensation for radiosity...

Given the symetry, I hope that you put only 1/3 of a turn in the gif.

I can change it back. However, in Wikipedia minimal area images are
preferred since space is at a premium and the extra space of the 4:3 is
just wasted. Also, the speed of the animation is the same as the original.
