Invitation to the POV-Ray Community

The Evolution Goes On!

We're starting to develop a 2nd Generation evolution game, called
EVOLUTIONS! , and we invite everyone who has ideas for a great game play or
game features or 3D modelling skills to join us!

In opposition to its predecessor (developed by a commercial company),
EVOLUTIONS! will be a FreeWare game, and the code will be OpenSource. At the
moment, we are inviting interested persons from all across the globe to join
us, and to help getting this visionary game off the ground. We believe, only
the status of OpenSource can give us the amount of skilled participants we
want for a project of that scale.

More at

http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=528469
and
http://sourceforge.net/projects/evolutionsgame

and here is the current game document:

Ready? Please join our forums at http://Evolutions.Jamaica-Focus.com/f

We need:
- Website Developers
- Graphic Artists
- 3D Artists
- Persons with Legal Skills
- Persons with Management/Organizational Skills
- Software Developers (Games)
- Persons with Physical Knowledge
- Music Composers (Soundtracks)
- Promoters
- and everyone with cool ideas and visions!

Welcome aboard!

Noooobody interested? Nobody curious? We are shocked! We thought the 3D
artists of the POV-Ray community would be very interested to become part of
the new game. We really need 3D artists...

Please join.

My reason for not responding at all to the first announcement is simple: I
missed it entirely (My bad.)

Although I find the project interesting, I'm not quite ready to shout "Sign me
up!" just yet. I'm posting my questions and suggestions here rather than in
the "Evolutions" forum because I think it's reasonably likely that other
"POVers" might desire some of the same information and might be motivated to
volunteer depending upon the responses.

It's possible that some of the information that I'm asking for is already
available SOMEWHERE within the multiple web site links listed in the first
post... and that's where the "suggestion" part comes into play. The main reason
that I'm not volunteering YET is that it's rather difficult to tell exactly what
I would be volunteering FOR. It would be very helpful if there were a clear
concise page for potential volunteers that explained for each position the
short version of what has already been done and what needs to be done next.
With respect to graphics/3D art:

Is there an existing set of images (Master Book)that establishes a visual theme
and tone for purposes of project continuity? Are you looking for someone to
create one?

Assuming that a fairly large proportion of the artwork needed will take the form
of 3D models, have any parameters been established with respect to modeling
tools and file formats to be used?

This might sound like a "clever-donkey" question, but it isn't meant to be: How
close is this project to having enough commitments from enough skilled people
so that it can really be considered "a go" rather than just a neat idea. I
realize it's a kind of chicken/egg situation... It would be easy to get a lot
of volunteers if we had a lot of volunteers. That's why I'm emphasizing the
need to create a clear and concise representation of both the project's vision
and status to be used in recruiting potential volunteers.

As for my own potential contribution, it's very possible that I would volunteer
to some graphic work if I had a specific request to respond to and enough
information to get right to work on it. My own personal take on volunteering
for such projects is, in fact, remarkably simplistic: "Work good; Committee
bad."

So, what (specifically) might I do to help?

Best Regards,
Mike C.

My name is Sven Littkowski, and I am the founder of the game project
Evolutions!, an OpenSource and FreeWare game featuring evolutionary concepts
of nature as well as of the psychology.

We are in the tradition of Spore, the 1st generation evolutionary game which
you might know from the media. We, however, work on the 2nd generation of
such a game, and intend to have more depth in our game than in the previous
game. And we avoid any commercial intentions with our new game, since we
believe more in an educational but fun-based goal. Everyone will be able to
download and play this game. And we expect to have a strong reflection in
the mass media and Internet.

We try to offer a view to the close and even most distant future of a
possible society and psychology, still through providing an exciting, rich
gameplay and stunning graphics. We are growing, and our first goal is to
attract enough skilled persons so we can go deeper and deeper into the
development. We are now at the stage to communicate with many online forums
and communities.

Please find our forum at http://Evolutions.Jamaica-Focus.com/f.

We would like to invite you to join us, and participate with your knowledge,
skills and ideas to the development of the game. I would appreciate your
input a lot, and everyone else in our growing community, too. We need many
programmers with DirectX knowledge, and also many 3D artists, which will
develop some wicked sample creatures and sample buildings and sample
spaceships, as well as landscapes and entire worlds (universe)!

You might know, that Spore got a lot of support from SETI (Mr. Seth Shostak)
which we intend to contact, as well. However, our circle of professionally
trained persons will include many others, as well, known from the media or
the Internet. POV-Ray artists - if you're interested to participate such a
project, alone or with your friends, now is the time! Welcome aboard!

Please do not hesitate to contact me, I remain sincerely,

Sven Littkowski

Hi Sven,

I'm not sure this is the right forum for you.
There are many talented artists here, but my guess is that you'd find more
interested people over on CGTalk for instance.

My second guess is that you are after people that use one of the Industry
packages such as 3ds Max or Maya and this forum is for POV-Ray. Allthough it
can create stunning images with the right input, it's not a tool for the
gaming business.

But I might be wrong. I've been wrong before. In 1985.

Regards,

Stefan
