Yes, it has been there since beta 1.

I noticed that other behaviour you described, too. Seems like people are
becoming fearful already, that the Team would do something they don't like
to see. I did not participate in any betatest before this one, but as far as
I can say, things are running good, don't they? Ok, there are still some
feature requests or the Team implements things in another way people like
them. But Pov 3.5 grows steadily to a more and more stable program, doesn't
it?

Keep up the good work, Team and Testers!

Well, I wouldn't call this an official announcement. It could be an ironic
(sort of) statement to the fact that no one waits till the announcement :-)
In fact I thought Chris might be a bit angry about that. (but I can
understand, that my interpretation of his statement ist not that logical).

Chris post is not a thread of it's own (well, maybe you don't like an extra
thread to the group, there are enough per day, and everyone searching the
group for real bugreports has to go through more than enough posts that
"consist" of no bug). But you could interprete the first answer of a
Pov-team-Member to a report of a bug-in-a-new-version as official
announcement, that now, you can dwonload the hot stuff...
If that's ok - ok.

Thank you anyway!

Every day, just after 6:00 and before 7:00 the sun arises. It had never happened to
me, that I woke up wondering whether the sun would arise or not that day. I
intensively use a beta for my personal works, I don't care about expiration date, and
I almost forget it. Then one day POV-Ray, very politely I must say, tells me that
time has come, we have to salute, goodbye beta 9, AufWiedersen. I then go to
povray.org, where I expect the new beta to be. As always, I find it, download it, and
beta testing goes on. I wouldn't expect to read on a newspaper that, once again, the
sun has risen...

Oh. Thanks for telling me that. I couldn't trust my memory to know if it
had been all along or not.

Yeah, maybe so... in a general way as it does have pitfalls. But gee, I
really liked visualizing that starving wolf pack tearing at an imaginary box
containing the next beta. Wonder if the people wanting to get at the source
code will be like that someday. :-)

Just to refresh some memories, this whole beta testing thing was reasoned
out as being better than releasing a half dozen 'final' versions last time.
You know, 3.1b to 3.1g. Have to wonder how many people out there might
actually be using 3.1e still.

We almost never make an official announcement, beyond what's on the web site.
From my point of view, the page says (and has always said, paraphrased), 'if
the old beta expires you can get the new one from here', and that is how it
works.

Making an announcement is IMO redundant. If it's there, grab it, no-one will
get annoyed since I wouldn't put it up if I didn't want folks to download it ;)

THANK YOU BOB, a voice of reason in a sea of confusion. I do not comb these
lists with a magnifiying glass as some people expect and so I thought the
web site was the best place to find out what was up. I didn't mean to
distract from all the hard work going on, I feel however like I tossed a
match on frayed nerves.

It's not that. It's just that if you despise POV-Ray or the people
responsible for it, no matter how innocently, you will get flamed. People
don't like that.

Despise: Look down on with disdain, condemn, reject with contempt. I think
what I wrote in no way fits that characterization. However I would say the
reaction was bordering on contemptuous. There must be a lot of super
sensitive people working on the beta, so I will try to walk on egg shells
and keep my humor to a minimum.

I have like 16 pvengine.exe files scattered across 4 partions on my HD.
I didn't check versions but I am reasonably confident that at least one
of them is an early beta version of v3.1 ( I think "v3.1a").

I had heard that one wasn't let out to the public, so you had beta tested
it? I presumed that one was the very first and there wasn't a 3.1 without
appended letter. Maybe I'm not recalling that right.
