For example, what ameks them different, and if they are better, why not

Thanks

I don't know why is'nt available any megapov features in povray3.5!! I'm
very curious like you when developer team think to write code for extra
megapov (also now when Nathan Kopp is in team ) And other general (simple i
think) 3d specifications like nurbs, subd, vertex motion blur, post eff.,
etc...
I think pov has very huge potential to do favorite renderer of many people
!!

A lot of questions, some answers:

Where:

Megapov: http://nathan.kopp.com/patched.htm
Megapov plus: http://homepage.mac.com/chrishuff/povpatch.html
PovMan: http://tofbouf.free.fr/clothray/download_en.html

List of features can be found on those pages or in the packages.

Why features are not included in official Povray (3.5):

Many of the megapov features are included, although some are radically
changed. Others were deprecated by the POV-Team. Some also came too late
to make it into Povray 3.5.

Others simply do not work in a reliable fashion or are only half-finished by
the original author. The goal of POV-ray 3.5 is to provide _stable_ and
_working_ set of features.

No MegaPov features in POV-Ray 3.5? That's curious. I thought that
at least 90% of the new features in pov3.5 come from MegaPov.

Ok, so I can look at the mogapovs as the unstable development branch of
Pov-ray, and pov-ray as the tested and known to work branch?

Errr, yes, okay. That's about it.

Just that sometimes when a "feature" is added, or changed, or improved,
things elsewhere in the code can break. So, to be a little humorous about
it MegPOV is currently the most stable program because it hasn't been
changed in so long. P-R v3.5 is still undergoing constant change right now.

Apparently, had v3.5 incorporated all of MegaPov no one would be seeing the
beta of 3.5 and final release would have been months (and months) away,
IMHO. But I know many of us are awaiting the new and improved MegaPov also
just so we can move it into the \bin\ alongside pvengine.exe and continue to
toy with it from the new official version.

Please bear in mind that the 3.5 GUI has been upgraded as well.

Bob H.

Or maybe you can look at megapov as the general population of all dogs
world-wide, breeding willie-nillie. And look at POV-Ray as pulling out the
best lines and breeding them true and stronger.

I didn't know povray had a gui? Or is it only the windows version that
has a gui? Useing linux I note there is no 3.5 beta, but since I am a
newbie I prefer to use the older, know good 3.1.

It's worth "upgrading" to megapov - all the standard pov features are there and
certain operations such as media are much improved*. And I won't even mention
iso-surfaces (oops).

* your jet-engine would be a lot easier with megapov
