I read somewhere that they used POV-Ray to make some parts of Star Wars
Episode 1. Is this true or is it just wishful thinking?

I have the DVD and haven't seen POV mentioned in the extras.
The 1700-2000 SFX shots pushed ILM to the limits and I
imagine they used every trick to speed the production.
Somehow I don't see how POV would fit in there :)

POV is great for still images but animating a scene with
any real complexity (meshes) is not feasible.

Why not? POV-Ray renders meshes extraordinarily fast.

Parsing is the key in this case, I think.

I think that a mesh2 parses quite fast.

I might be wrong, but I think Kari was refering to the animation (e.g.
deformation) of meshes that is still hard to do in POV, whereas most
commercial packages have routines that take care of this automatically.

Well, it's possible that some of the background details might have been modelled
in pov and made their way into the film, and such minor details might not have
earned a credit.

Presumably, as time is of the essence, sfx makers aren't averse to a bit of
scavenging. I'm SURE I saw someone in the pod-race crowd holding my teacup...

(we can dream, can't we?).

BTW the crowd scenes at the pod race (i.e. the audiences in the stadium) were
not rendered. They were coloured q-tips poking up, with the bulk of the q-tip
underneath. Someone wiggled them to create nice crowd movements....

A bit insulting to think q-tip manafacturers had a closer assoc. with SW than
the massed ranks of pov... (well, maybe not - SWEP1 stunk...)

f-ups set... (IMHO)

Not that I'm aware of....

...but on a slightly different note there is a POV-Ray Star Wars website
featuring X-Wing, Millenium Falcon, Tie Fighters and many other models in
POV format. It looks like this site hasn't been updated for a while as some
of the models are are in POV 3.0 format.

Also on a SW Episode 1 note...
Someone has done a Naboo fighter ship in Moray and I have also seen some
images on this server featuring other models from SW Episode 1.

Does anyone know of any other Star Wars/POV related resources?

Ryan spent far too much time and effort on a Moray X-Wing... :)

Bye for now,
     Jamie.
