i'm wondering what the speed is dependent on.  is the referenced object
the main time hog (i.e. the more complex the object the slower it
gets)?  would it be better in some cases to apply the same texture
seperately to an object's many parts, or to the whole?

  You got it right (AFAIK).

  Why don't you try and tell us the results of your tests? I think these
kind of info is interesting.
