In a sense they are through Megapov. If your patch is good and
people in general find it useful then it can make it into the
official version, what's wrong with that?

I said that PovRay was freeware, whereas 3DS Max is a commercial *product*.
Whether or not PovRay has "commercial value" is irrelevant to our
discussion, since PovRay is not being sold as a commercial product. Also,
the intellectual property cannot be stolen since it's freely available for
download.

Intellectual property is a joke, IMNSHO. However, in the sense that IP
can be "stolen" at all, it can be stolen from the various contributors
to POV-Ray. Whether or not POV-Ray is being sold for money is completely
irrelevant to the fact that it enjoys the same protection under the law
as 3DS Max or any other piece of commercial software.

POV-Ray, as outlined in the documentation, has a commercial retail price,
not just commercial value.

The intellectual property can be considered stolen if someone resells it, as
outlined in the documentation.

You understood nothing about intellectual property, then.
What could be stolen is indeed the free-ness of POV-Ray. If someone
took parts of POV-Ray to include in a commercial product (as could
happen with your views), it would be theft, making money on the
back of people who whished to share something for free.
