I tried Irfanview maybe three years ago - a demo from a shareware CD I
had purchased. It infuriated me that when I installed it the setup
program over wrote all of my image file associations in the windows
registry. It took me forever to get my system straightened out after
that.
Does the current version of the program still do this ?

I wish it did. Corel did this to me and if Irfan would do it I could
reinstall it and fix most of my problems. I hate waiting for Corel to load
everytime I click on a .tga just to see part of an animation.
Uh... in other words... No, I don't think so. At least it didn't for me.

Corel and IrfanView do that. In Win98, in Windows Explorer, right-click the
name of the file and in Open-With, you can change that behaviour. I also had
the same problem with IrfanView, and with Corel. The Media Indexer in Corel
should be banned from earth. But what I wanted to say about Irfanview is
that everybody has to be pretty aware of their designing site. This is, I
was very impressed with the new design -which uses a fancy DHTML, and
clicked on the link- after that, a language change, and then you cannot go
out, especially because the scripts detects a windows user and starts to
write strange words in another language, from which it is only visible the
word micro$oft. It messed with my files in some way. It is not that
important, but very upsetting.

Marjorie

The version I've got won't do this unless you ask it to.

I already don't recall what it allows at setup time, I have version 3.07 and it
does allow for checkboxing on/off any of the file formats and this newer version
3.10 has been improved further still. It's a great program, especially for
freeware! I just hate the bug-like icon and always change it to one of the
others.
There's the File/Open in External Editor menu item too so you can move an opened
image elsewhere for major changes.
The URL to get it is:
http://stud1.tuwien.ac.at/~e9227474/
and lists features about it there too.

This is a very common and extremely annoying problem with windows programs.
They steal all the associations they want without asking, thus causing
lots of problems to the user.
There are few exceptions. I remember a program that didn't only ask if I
wanted to reassociate the file type it knew, but it also allowed me to choose
which file types to reassociate and which don't. All programs should be like
this.
If Microsoft wanted to develop windows, they could add an option like
"Ask before allowing new software to reassociate file types".

I use a little program, IOpener, that came with the GUM modeler.
Just associate my targa's with it.

ACDSee does just that. I used it until it recently started to behave badly:
takes about 99.99% of the cpu time for ever....

I installed gimp (for windows) and it asked me if I wanted to change them or
not, it is also a fine program.
