I need a "robot" figure, something crude and boxy and angular. I'm debating
doing it from scratch using a text editor and CSG, or using Poser. Poser
can replace "parts" with my own, but can I supply my own parts as POV
objects or do I have to use 3ds mesh objects? Or can I somehow find the
keypoint data out of a poser file and use that to position my own objects?

If you use 3DWin to convert from Poser 3ds to pov there is a menu item
in 3DWin where you can view each mesh object extents. I guess it would
depend on how many different mesh pieces there are as to how much benefit
you will get from this information. Personally I think I would just go
with starting from scratch and using CSG operations but that is up to
you to decide.

That's what I ended up doing. So far, so good. See
