Who does that copyright belong to. When I post any message any where is
there a copy right assumed and implied ?

I suspect that they are saying the article is copyrighted by the poster,
since that is a legal assumption of any post unless otherwise noted. The
'server' cannot override -your- right of copy without your permission.
Unless someone with more information about the motives of the POV team
contradicts me I suppose that they are doing us a favor by declaring what is
usually simply assumed.

The POV newsserver functions exactly like a magazine. The magazine is
protected by copyright plus the comtributing authors also have their own
copyrights.
In reality, a copyright does not prevent infringement. It only gives the
owner the right to take legal action against infringements.
Visit the copyright office website for everything you ever wanted to know
about the subject.

Sounds like a good analogy. Then posting to a newsgroup would be
analogous to granting one time publication rights to the magazine.
What you wrote it still "yours" implicitly, but the newserver(s)
you posted to can distribute it.
So, ultimately, the statement that started all this just sounds like
a reaffirmation of the POV-Team's policy on not having the contents
of this newserver fed into USENET coupled with a reminder to others
not to just republish posted articles, pics, or source codes without
permission.

This is to assist us in our attempts to stop other newsadmins stealing the
posts here by feeding them to USENET. At least, it may not stop them, but it
gives us a very good case to tell them to halt once they start. We don't want a
feed to usenet (see http://www.povray.org/groups.html).

Hypothetical situation:
A message is posted on c.g.r.r. seeking information related to Pov. The
question is outside my level of experience to answer but I recently saw
a similar question answered here in the groups. The easy thing to do of
course would be to simply quote the answer posted here to the question
on c.g.r.r.. By this copyright restriction am I obligated to take the
answer from this group and reword it so that it's contents become my
own ?

Actually, aren't all of our postings to povray.binaries.* getting sold on
those POV CD's?

Not that I have heard. They are instead taken from the i.r.t.c. competition.

Ken, this is correct. In addition, the proceeds of the Official IRTC and
POV-Ray CD-ROMs go towards supporting this news server (hint, hint).

We assert 'collection copyright'. Posting an individual article doesn't
violate that. Taking the entire group (as some newsadmins have done) does.
Individual copyright would apply. However, it could be suggested that by
posting to a newsgroup, the user involved expects their message to be
widely viewed. I'd be amazed if anyone actually complained.
