Has anyone looked at the numerous grass macros (i have looked at a few) and
perhaps knows of a tutorial for making a field of grass? Ken I know I asked
you about the grass on a hilly slope thing so I won't ask again (leveller
right?) And also, anyone know about ways of coming up with realistic looking
rain?

It seems that there are presently two ways to create fields of grass :
- a simple height-field for grass looked from afar (nice enough in many cases)
- a grass macro that creates individual blades for grass in close-up. Most grass
macros I've seen give very similar results.
The trick to make a whole field is to create a small mesh patch and then
replicate it where it's needed. I've included for instance a "Prairie" macro in
my own grass macro (
http://www.mediaport.net/Artichaud/Tran/sources/gtsrcef.htm) that replicates the
patch on a flat surface. You can also look at Abe's source file for his
impressive "Afternoon" picture (source in binaries.scene-files 14 april 1999)
where the grass covers a hillside. Positionning the patches on a given surface
and adjusting the level of randomness for the blade size, shape, color and
position require some coding. It can be interesting to mix several types of
grass, or to use a function that changes the density of the grass on the
surface. Note that some of the surface creation macros that are currently shown
on binaries.images could be customised to display grass meshes instead of
triangles or spheres. Chris Colefax's fur macros can be used to that purpose
too.

I just remembered a great pic by Marco Semprini in binaries.images (2/2/99) that
features some very realistic rain...

Hmm . . . I could apply a bump map to a height field. . .that would probably
work out best in this case for me I think.

It was rather strange that your picture
(http://www2.altnews.com.au/povlab/povlabdir/month/garden.jpg, again) didn't get much
more comments when its URL was posted (I'm also guilty of that of course since I
rarely
comment on pics). There was a lot to wonder about in it (the general composition, the
sky, the textures, the trees, the rain...) and it passed by almost unnoticed. Perhaps
it
is that the best pictures doesn't need to be commented on since there's little room
left
for criticism or improvement. Or perhaps it is just the imprevisible chaotic way of
the
newsgroups. Anyway I did remember this picture !

I have a mental image of this so I just think of it again whenever it is
brought up. If I recall correctly there were several comments made about
it before, constructive criticism and good old fashioned admiration.
I just now went to see it for real again; it is composed nicely I think.
The fence or gate isn't quite right due to the lack of hinges if a gate
afterall or the central post being divided yet not separated enough if,
once again intended to be a gate (think this is observer specific, since
there does appear to be some sort of "hinge" points and a tightly fitting
gate is possible). Entirely passable of course if a fence only. The rain
had gotten a bit of the "jaggies" in places, but overall looks okay
despite a noticable lack of denser rain drops with distance or rather
obscuring "fogginess". I'm sure all this has been said and done before
though, so I'll move on. But first I'll say, a fine looking picture, Marco

Really it doesn't look like a gate ?? :((
Think that sPatch model is based upon digital photos i made with a Casio of a real
gate... i
don't remember about the presence of hinges.... you have created big doubts in my
mind...
