Hi. I just wanted to check some things with you all. It's mainly about
the future of POV-Ray.

a) Is 3.5 coming out sometime this year?
b) Will 3.5 be an official SuperPatch, including Mr. Kopp's and others
stuff?
c) Will 4.0 be a complete rewrite of POV? If so,
d) Will 4.0 be rewritten for
    1) speed purposes,
    2) clean-up,
    3) language changes (C++),
    4) extended expandability (greater ease in features addition), or
    5) all of the above and more?
e) If number 4 applies, then will it incorporate
    1) an improved use of triangles (spherical heightfields, bend,
twist, etc.),
    2) this

Thanks. I'm just kinda curious/anxious, and wondering if I'll ever be
able to work with POV (i.e. make money), or I'll have to go and learn 3D
Studio or Lightwave, or something like them, and leave POV as a hobby.

As much as I love it, I don't think that POV is usable in professional
conditions that demand and value productivity. Programmes like Max or
Lightwave come with lots of bells, whistles and plugins that make the life
easier for the user, and cheaper for the user's client, and we all know how
hard it is to create good scenes with POV (doing it the hard way is part of
the fun actually). Just think that the AWSOME OCEAN PIC we've seen was
(probably) done with a plugin for Max and Lightwave. Doing this with POV
could be theoretically possible but would require an amount of work and
rendering time not compatible in a professional situation.  I don't think
that even POV 4.0 is likely to change that situation (be sure that I ***
wish *** I'm mistaken).
I've worked now and then for clients with POV (and made very little money
out of it), but fortunately I was not asked to do the kind of stuff you can
see in the Max or Lightwave sites because I wouldn't have been able to do
them within an acceptable deadline, even with my 6 years of experience with
POV. And of course, the clients expect you to use the standard tools of the
trade. So my little piece of advice is : stick to POV for art & hobby, and
learn Max, LW or some other pro tool if you want to do pro work.

said OK, learning experience, then afterwards he paid me $10. Have I already

You beat me :) The first picture I ever sold was 2$. The second one was 2$ too.
OK, they are all faded by now, I presume. I'm not looking for clients, it is just
that sometimes I have been asked to do some work based on some already-made
pictures of mine, but the very few times this happened could hardly be considered
as a professional experience in the field of 3D design. Some teens in this group
(just ask Lance Birch) may actually know much more than me about this.

I'm definitely wouldn't consider myself a professional yet, but I've had a
little experience anyway... :)  he he he

I've done the graphic design and network timer programming for an Internet

I'm now their system administrator (which isn't much fun... especially when
you're called in to fix a "problem" and get there to find out the hub's
power transformer cable has fallen out... ;-)  LOL

If you want to see what that job involved, I've got an image of 1 of the 5
background screens I designed for them here:  (I also did their screen
savers, menus etc etc)

http://members.xoom.com/lancebirch/Server.png  (it's 524 Kb... I know I
know, big file, but it's got some fine lines in it and the JPEG, even on
100%, washes the detail right out making it look smudged...)

The idea was to create simple yet colourful screen backgrounds for each of
the terminals, all of which had their own unique colour scheme, and also
some room for desktop icons etc.  They were very pleased with the results,
and I must say so am I.  I've also done a few other little graphic design
jobs, but they didn't involve much 3D work.

Of course I envy Gilles for his amazing work with POV-Ray... :)

Probably not the photon mapping.  Other stuff: yes (with further
enhancements).

I doubt it.  If somebody codes it as a user patch it might.

Again, if there is enough demand or somebody codes it.

Probably not.  This was pre-halo.  And halo was replaced by media.

probably not.  3rd-party converters fit more with the way POV works.
POV 3.5 should have a new mesh syntax which is much smaller than the
current one and will also support UV mapping, so objects from 3ds and
other formats can be converted completely (with textures... you can
already do this with a combination of UVPov and 3ds2pov).

BTW, are you sure your photon patch won't get in? A friend of mine is getting
himself 3d studio max r3 with Mental Ray, and it does some nice caustics. It
would be a pity to not be able to keep up with him.

  I see Nathan has already answered your questions. For reference:

  Chris Young's official announcement is also posted in
povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions group. The post is
entitled, "POV-Ray plans for version 3.1 and beyond...".

  This group is also a good place to check for future updated
announcements from the POV-Team.

  When v3.5 is near its release date (which will be when it will be) a
