Hi Spider,

I've taken to avoiding reading your posts, as whenever I do, it changes the font (in
Outlook Express ) to a large and ,dare I say, quite ugly one, and I have to go into
Options and change it. It's not my intention to cause offence, I was merely wondering
why
this was happening, as it never used to. And I do like to hear what you have to say.

Regards,

Andy

I've noticed the same thing. Also, it's not limited to Spider's posts since
I have encountered it with others (both in the newsgroup and in email).
Maybe it's that demon, HTML :>}

Spider's posts aren't in HTML, but they're in a "user-defined"
charset, which might be confusing your newsreader. When I'm
using SLRN, it offers to run them through metamail, because
they're a nonstandard MIME type. This is probably a config
problem on his end, but I haven't complained about it before
now because they are just plain text, and telling SLRN to
ignore the MIME type makes them perfectly readable for me,
unlike HTML.

Hello group.
I am aware of the problem, and of HOW it came to be.
But I am not familiar with any way of getting RID of it..

I am using Netscape 4.5 as a newsreader, and web-browser..
I know that the error ocurred when I had installed JDK 1.2 that included the JAVA 1.2
plugin.
It then messed up the settings, and all my messages was shown as Binary.
So, to get rid of this, I set the view-> character set to user-defined, since that was
the
thing that worked and showed my mail.

Then, I uninstalled JDK, and the plugin, but I haven't been able to _save_ any
settings
since.
The character set always returns to user defined, whatever I do.

Does anyone know how to fix this mess for me ???
I haven't opened the registry yet, since it is generally a mess to find all occurances
there..

All help appreciated, and once more, I do not wish to cause any trouble for you out
there.

In need of help,
//Spider

Netscape has a nasty habit of hiding it's utility reference
files all over the place. You might try finding the file
called prefs.js (ithink it's js ?)and either rename it or
delete it. This will force you to reconfigure everthing
again the first time you start the program. Then again
that part of the information my no be stored in the
particular file. If you really want to get rid of pesky
Netscape bugs check the dates of every file in the
subdirectorys. If they have todays date then you know
the program has been writing to it. Bite the bullet
and delete them all. You will have to resubscribe to all
of your newsgroups, lose stored email access files, lose
your browsers history file, and a probably a dozen other
unknow consiquences but I feel this will have a good chance
of correcting you current problem without having to muck
around in the registry file.

Either that or just use the dos command deltree and reinstall :)

I have never had a problem reading your posts - I don't think
anyway. Is that you typing in three periods after every sentence
or is the program adding that for you ?

No, the dots are just me and my lazy typing style. Intended to mark my sighing,
dreaming,
depressed way of expressing myself. I'll try and stop it, since I know it's a pretty
bad
habit that disturbs the reading pattern. But...*sigh*
