This might be a bit off topic, but I can't seem to get the attachments
from the messages in these groups using Free Agent. Am I missing
something or what.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

I think Free Agent can't manage base64 encoding and MIME. I suggest
the commercial Forte Agent 1.5, which has a very reasonable price and
the possibilities it offers as compared to Free Agent are really a
lot. Here's an extract from the readme:
"Agent 1.5 includes all of the features and functionality of Forte's
award-winning newsreader, Free Agent 1.1, plus a multilingual spelling
checker, basic email functionality, folders, sorting, address book,
kill/watch lists for email and usenet messages, MIME support,
cross-post management, URL launching, customizable toolbar, message
list filtering, global searching of messages, support for secure
logons, and support for corporate email systems using MAPI."

I used to use Free Agent until I registered for Forte Agent . To
decode attachments I used the mime convertor MUNPACK, free from
ftp.andrew.cmu.edu:pub/mpack/.
I can heartily recommend Forte Agent, however.

Or you could always use Outlook Express's newsreader. I've never had a
problem with it; but I use Free Agent as well; just not for the pov ng
server :>

There's also WinVN or even Netscape or IE as Newsreaders too.
All 3 are free.
Don't have the URL to WinVN (Windows-based), but a search engine on the
'net will find it. Netscape 4.5 with Communicator is working flawlessly
for me; that is, if you don't count the odd JPGs I get now and then ;)

With that mentioned, I'd also throw in Netscape 4.5. I guess it's OK for us
lazy, low-standard people.

SLRN! There's nothing like a good console-mode newsreader. Among
the features that distinguish it from Agent: it actually understands
crossposts, and only forces you to read them once. It can do scoring,
rather than just outright killing, based on real regular expressions.
It's open-source. It doesn't promote tooth decay. And it renders
HTML posts and vcards in a way that makes it perfectly clear that
they are pure garbage.
