On the subject matter of female graphic artists... and this is just my
personal opinion only, I think the females do a much better jogb than most
males when it comes to creativity and imagination. Society in the past
however has not been able to accept the fact that women are just as good as
men. As far as I'm concerned, if there were more women in political power
(not trying to get into politics here though) than the world would be a
better place!!! As for POV-Ray, although it seems that there are a lower
number of women using POV-Ray than men, I feel that this number is rapidly
increasing, and will continue to increase in the future. I think it's great
that females can get in on the POV-Ray scene, and 3D graphics in general.
It seems that it's bringing a lot more creativity, imagination and
sensitivity to the 3D world. I think that men are far more factually
creative in their art than women are and this unfortuneately causes (as has
been stated before) an overdose of SciFi pictures (which I'm personally sick
to death of!!!). I don't know how many million different viewpoints I've
seen of the Starship Enterprise or an X-Wing fighter!!! <g> I suggest all
the male artists that feel that they are better than female artists
immediately take a look at www.oken3d.com for a shocking experiance :-) The
creativity in that site is far above any site I've seen produced by a male
artist!!! It's also interesting to note how many females are getting into
the programming field now, for more than in previous years.
So, to conclude, I've posted a little survey on my website. I'd like
everyone to go there now and do it (it only takes 30 seconds, don't quote me
on that :-). It will also answer my previous question of age groups in
POV-Ray. Check it out at
http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/parallax/359/pov_quick_survey.html
Thanks to everyone who enters!!!

I always do anything they tell me not to do: it took only 10 seconds to fill
in the form :-)
(BTW, that's not really true. I do it often, but not always. Anyhow I
really hate to get orders ;-)

Sorry, it wasn't meant to be an order, more a suggestion :-)
Unfortuneately FortuneCity's CGI scripts are playing up and are really slow
at the moment so I don't even know if that worked...

Funny you mention this, because I usually try to avoid the classical "male"
themes in 3D, (busty babes, cars, warplanes, spaceships, dinosaurs and "my
desktop with the computer, the coffee mug and the venetian blinds"), not because
I don't like them (I've drawn enough of them when I was a teenager to last me a
couple of lifetimes ; I still can draw a T-Rex in a F-14 from memory, though),
but because I need something else. However, I still have trouble entering a more
"intimate" realm of artistical feeling, something that is often found in works
by female artists, so I'm kind of stuck in between. I've discussed this with
some women artists I know, and I still got no clue why it's like this.

Yes, that's the precise thing I do, lean away from it! With the vast world
we have, there are so many other great things you can use as a theme for
art!!!
>"intimate" realm of artistical feeling,
Yes, women do seem to be able to do this much better than men... I wish I
was as good as any of the female artists in my commercial art and design
class!!! (I feel lowly and inadequet when here I am sitting at a computer
and someone's making an incredible work of art on the wall beside me, with
traditional media!!!)
Then again Gilles, I still think your work is top-notch, if I could do half
the stuff you can do I'd be overjoyed!!! :-)
Keep up the good work in the new year!
Oh, and by the way, someone emailed me and said that the survey page I set
up only had three fields and no text. This is most likely a problem with
the browser's ability to link style sheets to the page. I've now included
the sheet in the page so it doesn't have to link it. This should fix the
problem.

Subject: Women are wired differently--> fractal uers!

From my church to my workplace to the Sunday Parade, I'm hearing about how women
are wired differently. Some scientist put a bunch of men and women in a maze.
The scientist then tested both whether they could find their way home AND what
details they could remember from the walls on their path. The men were better
at finding their way out (better 3D reasoning); the women were better at
remembering what they saw along the way (noticing details and patterns).
I'd bet that a woman with equal creativity, intelligence, and love of computers
to the POV-community would get into FRACTALS instead of 3D raytracing. That's my
rough impression from the number of web sites by women fractal artists.
Of course, a woman with equal intelligence and educational opportunities might
try something more nurturing (nursing), or language related (law, languages)
than engineering.
I've also heard that men like to compete, to win, to lose, to find out how they
rank against others. Women like to nurture relationships and make friends.
Thus, a female raytracer might be more likely to set up a web site full of tips
to help others (ala Sonya Roberts) rather than to enjoy the confrontational
risks of the IRTC.

I'm about to set up a fractal gallery... just thought I'd throw that in,
however irrelevant it may be.

I'll have to see how that works at Lockheed Marietta... my cousin (female) is one of
the engineers.
And yes, I've been TRYING to get her into POV'ing... she also has an art degree from
Reed, which could be a very dangerous thing.
