I see the on-again off-again server is up once more.
Is there any official explanation of the abysmal behavior of late. I'm
wondering if the lack of new mail is due to the fact that most of the
users have simply given up due to unreliable service.

I realise this is a free service offered by the the kind folks at
POVRAY and I'll be first in line to thank them for their efforts in
providing a medium of intellectual exchange but this is REALLY
frustrating.

And what happened to the PSP feed ?

Well you're welcome to offer to pay the US$500 per month that I was quoted to
provide a reliable co-located server with a good link.

The previous news server software was crashing and every time it did it took
this machine down with it, usually corrupting the filesystem in the process.
Each time this happened I had to drive a distance of over 50 miles to go and
fix it.

I find it incredible that people such as yourself feel that you have a right to
bag a service that SOMEONE ELSE (i.e. me) is paying for. I would have been
totally justified in just taking it down entirely, instead of spending all the
time needed to install and configure a different news server and write perl
scripts to copy the articles between the db format of the old one and of the
new one.

Your claim that you 'know' we are volunteers doesn't cut any ice. Your comment
about 'abysmal' behaviour is insulting and unreasonable given the efforts and
cost we have incurred in keeping it going to date. The fact that you know
you are addressing it to volunteers only makes it worse. We have no obligation
whatsover to provide you with any sort of news service - even an abysmal one.

I just want to say *thanks* for this great service. I don't understand
how anyone can say it's unreliable, sure - it have been going up and
down a little. But considering it have gone *up* after just a short
while means we should be thankfull. At last I would like to pointout
that this newsserver actually is *better* than the one my ISP provides
me with, my ISP's server is *slow* but this server is about 2-3 faster
(eventhough I probably have to cross the world a couple of times before
connecting!) plus this server don't have any junk mail / spamms / etc...

Hear, hear! Granted, I suffered some withdrawal symptoms when all I
had to sustain me was cgrr on my local feed, but that just shows how
much this server must mean to me. Keep up the good work, and don't
let the complainers get you down. Most of us truly appreciate what
you're doing for us.

I'll second the opinion that this server is more reliable than my
local one. Only about one post in ten to CGRR makes it to my home
server.

I just want to say that I know what you must be going through, and I
appreciate your dedication. I just wish there was something I could do, to
contribute to the Pov-Ray community, as well.
Maybe I should just sit down and shutup more often? =)

Dear all,

And more support from me, just a great service that would really need to be invented
if it wasn't already.
Well, I guess some down time showed us how much we like it. It also is a sign, I
guess, of how much work has been put in to restore a new and better news server ...
success is not easy to manage, isn't it ?

Best of luck to the lads doing the job,
Al.

Go to the povray site and order the IRTC CD.
Read the text there to find out why.

wrote some words that I sincerely hope people using this news server
 take to heart.

Listen up people! We are benefiting from the unselfish efforts
of some great people.

They are too decent to tell a jerk to FOAD. I am less decent.

I shouldn't write anything more.

Not as much as I want to ... too busy.
But I keep up, especially with the IRTC.
