I was wondering if any of the POV-ray programmers and artists who post all
these wonderful messages on these news groups would perhaps like to begin
discussing a common project, possibly a game or something similar, that
would use only Pov generated graphix.  Several programmers, several years
ago, from several different locations decided to put their heads together in
a common cause, and take a look at the result, POV-ray the program we have
all grown to love.  If a program could be constructed as such(and if it
turned out any good), would help promote the Persistence Of Vision raytracer
and thus strike a blow to all that is evil and make the rendering universe a
better place to render in.

Maybe would could even get some help from the guys over at the IRTC.

I started an adventure-style (ie. MYST/RIVEN) video game using POV
graphics a little while ago. We got a little ways but it ultimately
failed. We were trying to do something MUCH larger than we were able to
handle. I would be willing to work on a small game though.

I like the idea, but I'm afraid it will turn into an attempt to another
violence-based fantasy thing. On the other hand, if you look at a thing like
Myst, you can do very nice things where graphics are more important then gore.
I suggest an adventure-type game playing in a (labyrinth-) museum where each
contributor can add a room. For instance each cell can be 10 cubic POV-units
with a door in the middle of one wall. Whatever goes on inside is up to the
contributor, but there has to be something to put in and something to 'collect'.

I'd be very much interested in (co-)developing such a concept.

Remco,  it's great to see that there is a portion of the public that enjoys
the occasional captivating adventure/puzzle game, however to give full
creativity to the artists who will be contributing we will not be limiting
their tallents to simply indoor traces.  As for the 10 cubic pov-units, it
will not be neccessary to limit them in that category either.  From the
programming aspect of the project, units in povray are arbitrary, therefor
the artist may use as much as the pov-virtual universe permits on their
machine(as long as they make a trace in each of the supported video modes
supported by the project).

If you use your imagination none of the "restrictions" I suggested will really
restrict anyone. Putting your scene into a 10x10x10 box is just a matter of
scaling and making an outdoors scene is just a matter of using a "magic door"
(portal). It would just add to the fun if you had the feeling you were walking
through a narrow corridor and when you enter a room all of a sudden you're in a
desert, or a cave, or a sub-molecular environment or whatever. Imagination!
That's what it's supposed to be all about I think.
On the practical side: if you want to work on such a project you'll have to come
up with SOME restrictions/guidelines.
