Here are the 'gears of the day' - they are so attractive that I can't
stop rendering them, interpreting them as objects of modern art.
Next challenge is to animate them properly, taking into account different
rotation speeds of the shafts.

Model is available here:

Also, put a dot (union a sphere onto your gears) to mark the rotational
position.

First, this gives a much nicer visual effect, because it gives your eye
something to lock onto and make better sense of the rotation.

Second, if you're going to make a cyclic animation, you need to have all of the
dots line up with where they started.

For long gear trains, that might be a LOT of frames.
You can likely put multiple dots on the gears so that you can use a fraction of
the frames to get a good cyclic result.

I can tell you now: That would make a valuable macro.

Thanks, absolutely agree - really good idea.

Probably, but I have powerful hardware resources - my hosting provider
assists me very well.

Really, this is the way to save a lot of time, I will think about
implementation, but at first I am planning to make a real-time online
animation like this one:

In the nearest future I will make a gallery of models and one of the
sections will be dedicated to mechanics stuff.
