Just a doodle while I'm thinking about the next major scene project.  I had to
go and relearn getting radiosity to work well with rough surfaces, (the pillars
in the scene).

It's only as infinite as you are willing to set max_trace_level ...

And since it's all isosurfaces, can't you "just" use Fn (mod (x,
unit_cell_width), y, mod (z, unit_cell_depth) )?
