Hi,

It's a desert planet featuring details created mainly with the ridged
multifractal function. The RMF function is always just outside my conscious
awareness, but a post somebody made on Reddit
(https://old.reddit.com/r/proceduralgeneration/comments/16y8rnz/the_wonderful_worlds_of_procedural_generation_100/)
seemed interesting, so I tried to recreate something using their methods. But
since their description wasn't specific, I only followed it loosely. I also
decided to use media instead of the aoi atmosphere trick, because when media is
used this way it: doesn't take too long to render; is easier to adjust; and
looks better overall :) The scene finished rendering in less than two minutes,
not counting the added glare.

The details look ok at this resolution, but tend to look... not ok... at higher
resolutions. You can check out the code here:

Looks quite good - especially given the quick render time.

I see you went with an orthographic camera. Is this due the use of media 
or some other reason?

Thanks, William. It's all thanks to the low render settings. The clouds actually
increase the render time more than anything, I think.

I wanted to give the impression that the planet was being photographed from
something very far away. It's what I've done for previous scenes with a
foreground: pre-render the distant body with an orthographic camera, and then
project that image into a new scene that has a close foreground. It's one way to
get around POV's limited epsilon value when rendering both very distant and very
close objects at the same time.

Thanks Thomas!

I like to label subsequent versions of scenes with letters of the alphabet (e.g.
Scene.pov, SceneB.pov, SceneC.pov, etc.) instead of numbers. It's because I'll
often append the render time (1m_56s = 1 minute, 56 seconds) to the image name
after it's done, and letters don't conflict with numbers ;)

Thanks! I need a better turbulence method, though, since the built-in turbulence
makes things a bit 'stringy' when viewed close up.

This is a beautiful image, Sam! I don't know why, but I'm expecting to 
see suddenly appearing a flying robot (something like Grendizer or

Thanks, Paolo!

A flying, interstellar robot is actually something I've been meaning to render
for a while... Something along the lines of a Gundam, which I think is pretty
much the next design after the models you mentioned. (I grew up loving
Transformers, but Gundams always looked cooler.)
