Spectrally rendered. Nightmarish render times. Attached is an early draft.

Deceptively simple. I can imagine the render times involved. I love it;
the final version will be gorgeous I expect.

Nice glass!

5.5 day render time isn't so bad. I'm currently rendering a glass
variation of my checkered sphere and it has been running for about 21
days. Glass and radiosity do not make the best friends :)

I must add that this was inspired by Richard Roseman's "Glass Panels":

I know that there are restrictions to the background, but one has some freedom
to design this grid. As all I understood so far, the grid must be recognisable.
I think a white marble texture or something alike should improve the image
without destroying your effort with the spectral rendering. But marble invites
to subsurface scattering prolonging the rendering time to eternity...

Best regards,
Michael

The first three stages (radiosity pass, spectral render, and spectral composer)
took 35 hours and 9 minutes, which is 23% less time (or 31% faster) than my
estimate of 45 hours and 55 minutes. Here's hoping that the remaining stages
(42 hours and 2 minutes estimated) will also surprise me.

According to the official rules, the grid must not be modified, not even the
texture. The density and positioning of the grid lines are strictly enforced,
from what I have seen. Obviously the rule not to modify the texture is
completely unenforced, but, to my everlasting self-imposed frustration, I tend
to be a compulsive rules follower.

In the face of strong temptation (akin to that of driving through a 10 mph
school zone at 20 mph, instead of 30 mph like everyone else), I looked at
Richard Roseman's submissions for guidance. (Roseman is the one running the
project.) The prima facie ruling is extremely conservative. However, closer
examination of "Glass Panels" reveals that the grid lines are affected by
caustics. This is not possible with the hard-wired texture in Trevor Quayle's
template adaptation. I am taking conservative liberties accordingly. (The grid
lines in the present WIP have a 2% diffuse reflectivity.)

I sure as hell will not use SSLT when I am dealing with dispersion through
multiple glass surfaces.

That last sentence made me laugh.
But for me rules are made to be bent to the point of breaking. If you
can do it with panache.
So do two versions. One for the competition and one for yourself (and us).

I'm wondering what your system specs are. (and everyone else's)
I seem to recall there was someone looking to use this cloud stuff to render
images... that would be cool.
There was also some sort of astronomical project where you could donate cpu time
- that would be sweet to do with POV-ray. I know a guy who'd give me old
laptops for 15 FRN's apiece. Get them all on the wireless network and
distribute the render across them... yeah... :)

Soft-shadow render, soft-shadow compose, and final assembly took 15 hours and 39
minutes, for a total render time of 50 hours and 48 minutes. Sneak preview is
attached.

My hardware is a Dell Inspiron 17R with Intel Core i7 (8 cores).
