These dandelions are absolutely incredible. I love the color variation on the
stalks and leaves. You could have skipped the randomization on the petals and
you'd never know because of the coloring. Awesome work.

Thanks, the textures are pretty basic and are in the demo file uploaded,
they don't look as good due to the poor quality of HDR probe I uploaded
but a better probe would improve this if you have one.
Been away from my PC this week so have not made any changes to the files
yet but will upload the flower version of the macros in the next few days.

Can you tell me to find a good introductory example of incorporating HDRI probes
into POV-Ray scenes is?
What makes a "good" probe?

Answer #1:
This is an example of a HDRI probe sky sphere. You can use .hdr or .exr
formats. The latter is best I believe:
sphere {

Not sure but any probe with a well-defined light source areas will do I
believe. I leave this answer to the specialists here though ;-)
Answer #3:
You can find ready made probes for instance here:

There are three packs in total. If you want, you can the .hdr maps into
.exr maps using Ive's IC application.
You can also make excellent sky sphere panes using Terragen Classic and
just render the sky, not the landscape. The rendered panes can then be
composited into probes with the help of Ive's TerragenSky_v2.inc macro.
It's been a long while since I used that but it gives excellent results.
Note: this only works with Terragen Classic, not with Terragen 2.

Adding HDR is really as simple as searching for free HDR probes (there are
lots), download it and add something similar to below to your scene:
sphere { 0 1 hollow
pigment{ image_map{ hdr "Portsmouth_Probe.hdr" map_type 1 interpolate 2 } }
finish { ambient 1 diffuse 1 emission 3} // use emission to control brightness
scale 4000
no_image // only if you don't want the probe visible
}
However, if using HDR then radiosity becomes pretty much essential or the effect
will not be any good.
I generated a couple of probes many years ago using megapov I recall seeing
something about outputting HDR format from Pov but to be honest unless you have
a great scene it will not compete with a HDR probe generated by taking
photographs.
