I see your cracked sphere and raise you the moon...
I used the code you posted in p.general, but I tweaked the scale somewhat. The
craters are courtesy of some code posted by Johannes Dahlstrom in 2002 (p.b.s.f,
p.b.i, Nov 2002)
I'm still trying to figure out how to do "Hero" craters, like the one that made
the crack...

You can assume that the impact that caused that crack appened on the far
side, and les your imagination do the rest...
Anyway, that moon took quite a pummeling.

By no ambient, he meant to add finish{ambient 0} to your texture.
Remember that the default ambient value is not zero.
