If you could upload a macro to the Object Collection I'd be thankful.

I'll have to play with this at home, but I think it should be feasable
with intersection ... I'll see if I can get my initials in a block like
that.

I will try to get the source up as soon as I get home on Friday, to show you the
technical method.
Until then I can just say that each "letter" outline is not random. It's alot
easier to do it with only two letters, but when there are three its a lot less
controllable.
Originally the vertical bar for the J was in the center, but this messed up the
G. I also had the J and W, E and O, F and O, F and D in the same cubes, that is
only 4 with no solid squares. This also produced some funky shapes.

Ah, so it can't be done with arbitrary strings or fonts? That's too bad.

I decided to try with my initials (LEH) and came up with this _VERY_
simplified test image. Just a single block with the three initials.
Fortunately, my initials were very easy to implement as simple unions of
boxes. These were then differenced from a cube. Note, difference not
intersection.
I don't know if this shape is physically possible, there might be
'floating' chunks in the middle someplaces. But it works as a POV image.
I did end up using rounded boxes instead of regular boxes, and I
probably should change to spotlights as well. But as I said, this was
just a simple initial test.

Surname in two parts, with high-ambient object and radiosity.
The third dimension looks to be a challenge; the differing widths of the letters
don't make for a straightfoward vertical cut.

I was surprised at how well this turned out. Only some of the letters were
clipped at the lower right corner--due, no doubt, to W, O, and D not having
lower right corners.
Since (through no fault of my own) I have no middle initial, I used my first
initial and split my surname into 2 parts.

So the only requirements for the technique to work in every case are that the
font be monospace and that each letter touch all four edges at some point?
Do you mind if I work on the scene and upload it in macro form to the Object
Collection?

Answer to save face:
That was part of the illusion intended.
Answer demonstraing ignorance:
I couldn't find a way to illuminate all sides of each cube (see attached).
I suppose in retrospect i could of put a light source within the larger blocks.
But I suspect it wouldn't give very distinguishable results.
