About two years later I find myself with some free time, so here's my second
real attempt in Wings3D. I always find myself pleasantly surprised with the
modeling capability, but I haven't tried to UV map anything yet.
The face doesn't feel quite right, but maybe it just needs eyes and color.
Lets see... neck too long, head to big(?), not house-trained. Anyone care
to guess the breed of my roommate's dog?

I have literally no idea how you can make something that detailed in
wings3D... or in any other software for that matter. The muscle definition
looks stunning. I'd say the face looks a little strangely proportioned, but
dogs have a lot of different face shapes so it's hard to be sure without
comparing to a photo.

Looks like it's got a bit of greyhound in it, or maybe dalmation purebred?

Indeed! Character modelling never fails to impress me. I for myself will
only ever attempt it when the interface is not mouse point'n'clicks, but
virtual reality gloves, so that it's just like handcrafting stuff... too
much trouble all these bezier splines, surface subdivision and extrusion
operators...

Thanks. It'd definitely worth a try. I started this just yesterday. To
steal someone else's joke about POV-Ray, per dollar Wings3d beats almost
anything else out there (error: divide by zero). It's not really a 'good'
model though. There are lots of three and five-sided faces, there aren't a
lot of good edge loops, and of course it's probably not anatomically
correct.

I think I'll give that one to you since a whippet is basically a miniature
greyhound (and since no one's ever heard of a whippet).

NURBS modeling always looked hard, but subdivision modeling is just a matter
of connecting points and dragging 'em where you want 'em. Until you get a
pair of virtual reality gloves, it might be worth a try and might impress a
little less.

Well I've used Wings3D a few times, but I have no idea how to model detailed
organic shapes. I can't even make good looking cars or spaceships, I tend to
have more luck with CSG (which is why my wings models seldom appear in my
pov work!).

I've heard of whippets... though I didn't actually know how they look
different to greyhounds!

great modelling. I think the thing about the issue with the head is actually
the neck. it looks like you just extruded one cross section once from the
shoulder to the jaw and called it good without adding muscles.

You have an excellent knowledge of anatomy and proportions then! Even if I
started last month, I would never reach this degree of perfection.
