I was originally working on this image for the IRTC complexity round. The
image was too bad to enter as I only started it halfway through December.
It is now looking better (I think) so I thought I would post it here.

The ground/mound are heightfields the grass and distant trees were created
with arbaro. The big tree on the right (it is meant to be a tree) and the
small twig like tree close up on the left were hand modelled (well
hand/macro) using blobs.

The tree/bark texture is a modified version of one I found at
http://www.wikipov.org/ow.asp?BarkMaterials

The little bug (it is meant to be a termite) on the tree at the front is a
blob.

I added a small amount of ground fog and rendered with a very small amount
of focal blur to try to give the image a bit of atmosphere.

I will need to speed up my modelling for the next round...

Nice perspective. I tried something similar in the past with an elephant
and a mouse. No go. ;)

    What next round?? :o/

Thanks, I am not too bothered about the deadline as when I started the image
I already knew I was unlikely to make it but at least the IRTC still gave me
and interesting idea for a scene.

Thanks Steve, I suppose all this waiting just adds to the suspense..

Yes! I'm raring to go! (If it's a subject I can do...) ;)

More about your image... You've managed to capture, (for me), the
classic 3D style with this. It seems like I'm wearing those red and blue 3D
glasses when I'm looking at your image. I really like it. It's a style that
I like, and it works for me. The textures - I'm kind of envying. Good (and
lot's of it) work, and thanks for showing.

This really is a very great image and scene. Congratulations!
In particular, this is how I like focal blur to be used! Not overdone, just
a little touch of it. Reminds me that I should use it like this in some of
my scenes...

Thanks again, I was having problems with the texture on the close up tree,
the pigment looked OK but I could not get a good normal. A quick search of
the web and I was pleased to find a good normal_map for a bark texture
which I combined with my pigments in a pigment_map and a few layered
textures to produce something far better than my earlier attempts.

The texture I found on the wiki used the same pattern for the pigment_map as
is used in the normal_map which I had never thought of doing before
(although it makes a lot of sense when you think about it).

I will tidy up the source (probably not a lot, I'm afraid my POV code lacks
a lot in style/comments/mathmatical ability etc... and generally contains a
lot of trial and error..) and post it to the sources group.

Sean

Thanks Thomas,

I tend to use focal blur now for all final renders, the quality of the
render is always much better (although this is of course offset by the
amount of time taken. Roll on POV 3.7 and dual core..)
