Yes, that was one of the reasons why I chose this option.

A glance from outside/above. Practical as they are, the people of
Gancaloon have used a former quarry to build the theatre.

Quite an impressive landscape. A great setting for a picnic. :-)

Given the number of seats you may want to increase the
capacity for entrance/exit a bit.

Nah, they are well-behaved people. And I wonder if any security
enforcement system would exist.
Maybe some buttress members along the long walls which are not part of a
box ? or prismatic walls (wider at base, thiner at top)

Anyway, the theatre is only for the educated upper class :-0

Buttresses are planned (before the walls cave in).

As always, credits for the texture of the Gancaloon landscape goes to
Jaime Vives Piqueres.
The 'quarry' is a simple inverted cone - heavily deformed and processed
of course - differenced from the height_field. Obviously, the theatre is
also differenced from the landscape :-)
I suppose that the less wealthy inhabitants go above the theatre to
watch the plays, if they feel so inclined. Those 'seats' are free I am
told, and it is more difficult to throw rotten tomatoes from there.

Thomas, How about it being built in a caldera instead of a quarry? A
grand opening play then something like: "Pompeii, The Final Hours!" One
must think of venue marketing.
Limited exits - and the heat from down under - would keep every audience
on the edge of their seats. Performers always in top form knowing they
might need to do a bit of improv. Heck, if the geological timing works
out, we'd have free, truly terrifying and spectacular effects no
prop-master could deliver.
"XYZ now playing at the Caldron Theater of Gancaloon."
The abrasive nature of the pumice stones surrounding the theater would
discourage those wishing to sit in on performances for free. Oh, and we
could deliver on your insect free seating promise!
Piles and piles of money to be had...
Bill P.

You have a grand vision Bill, too grand for simple Gancaloon indeed I am
afraid! However, that would be an interesting scene to build using an
arena like the Colosseum in Rome, put into the Vesuvius crater for
instance, or on Hawaii for a more continuous show.

Your city project is very impressive. It would be nice to walk around in
it. Too bad that's not possible in POV-Ray. :(
