I'm finishing up old scenes and projects, and the first in line was the ants
scene. I'm not satisfied with the mesh-branch modeled in Wings3d, but as
I've too many things pending to finish, I think this is the final render...
Rendered in about 3h with the latest beta (Athlon 64 X2 5600+) at double
size, then re-sized down to soften the insufficient focal blur samples.
The background tree is from POVTree, and the HDRI from www.unparent.com.

Fantastic!
I would suggest you turn the saturation down a bit on the leaves.

Another fascinating one - but you're right with the branch: The bark
needs more detail.

Beautiful and evocative (and maybe even humorous--those ants look so purposeful,
in a 'straight-and-narrow' sort of way.)
The DOF is a 'bit' grainy. And like others have said, it would be nice to see
some more bark detail on the focused branch. Maybe just a few differenced bumpy
HFs?? The scene's *so* close to being --great--.

Yeah, but it didn't match the greens on the HDR probe...

Thanks, that was really an elegant and efficient way to let me know that
I was being too lazy... in fact, it's a general problem with my patience: I
usually give up when I'm almost there.
So, here is the "really final" version with an improved branch, using the
mesh displacement from Poseray, and also with better textures on the
POVTree. I also raised the DOF samples a bit, so this one took 12h!
Thanks to everyone for the criticism, even if I was already aware of
it... I needed it to overcome my laziness.

Hi - Long time no speak!
I Love this image and the concept, but I think the DoF is very grainy - unless
that's the effect you were going for?
Maybe you should try post-processing in photoshop following the render?!

I do know that feeling! Let's say I get a scene to 90% of the way I want it
within a couple of days (actually, a gross under-exaggeration.) It's that final
10% that takes weeks longer! By which time all I want to do is put it away so I
don't have to look at it anymore--all the newly-seen flaws seem insurmountable.
Of course, coming back to it later with a clearer mind makes it *so* much easier
to tackle.
