This is the second episode of the adventures of "Harold on the road",
in a version probably (very) close to the final one.
A few credits : snail model by G.Tran, Micra car (the closest one) by
R. Bui, other cars by various authors found at
http://dmi.chez-alice.fr/models1.html .
Trees made with Arbaro and PovTree. Edges of the main objects obtained
with my PovEdge program.

Love it! Where's the first episode? I'm curious what approach you took

Ohyes, this is wonderful. It's interesting how the deliberately flat
texturing looks so realistic in this image - I guess it's the contrast with
the outlined objects... very nice indeed.

Arbaro sounds nice, though written in java: certainly faster with polygon
trees than the many CSG macro generators. Is there any reason why povray
SDL would not handle it, other than performance perhaps?

I've seen PovEdge before and it seems to have matured a lot to be able to
produce such smooth round edges. I myself am not really into
non-photorealistic raytracing, but this is definetely a plus for the povray
community. :)
I'm curious about render time. :)

Thanks. The first episode, I don't think I have posted it on this ng. It

The caption reads "Of course it was a shortcut, but Harold knew he would
need all his vigilance to go through the roadsign fields".

The whole ground (road + landscape) is a single parametric isosurface.
In fact, the curve of the road in the xz plane is a parabola, and I have
computed "local coordinates" for points on the road (U : position along
the road, V position across the road). This a kind of analytical UV
mapping, which allow me to get easily the texture of the road, and
placement macro for objects on the road.

Thank you. I simply tried to keep the landscape textures compatible with
the cel-shaded cars (so, simple flat textures).

The nice point about polygon trees is instantiation : multiple copies of
a single tree cost the same resources as the single tree.

Thank you. I have used the version posted here a few weeks ago. Getting
the edges for most of the cars was really a question of minutes.

With the simple textures and the unique light-source, rendering was
quite quick (~1 hour at 3600x4800 !). Because of the many objects and
edges, parsing becomes a bit long though (~15 minutes).

This image would have great potential to become an awesomely realistic
image if you dropped the outlines, used some more elaborated textures
and perhaps a photorealistic sky.
Some people have commented that they like the mix between realistic
and cartoony elements in the image. I have to be honest, I don't really
like that too much myself. It makes the image just look odd. Either it
should be completely cartoony or completely realistic. This kind of
mix between the two just doesn't work very well, IMO.
It would be interesting to see a photorealistic version of this
image.
