I'm looking for a way to do place settings for these tables.

Fork, knife, spoon, folded cloth napkin, and a water glass.
It doesn't have to stand up to a lot of scrutiny.

Is there a library of such things around?

or

What can I use to model these items?

I'm partial to HamaPatch myself. Most people seem to like Wings3D. These
are both patch editors.

There's always the POV-Ray objects collection at
http://objects.povworld.org/. I don't remember seeing forks and spoons
there, though.

Also, Txemi Jendrix has a hamapatch tutorial
(http://www.txemijendrix.com/tutoriales/Hamapatch01/intro.html) with which
you can learn to create a cup and spoon. It's in Spanish, but if you don't
read Spanish, there's always http://babelfish.altavista.com, which does a
fair amount of translating. Just realize that "bellboy" actually means
"mouse button". That was the funniest/strangest mis-translated item I
recall...

Also, if you don't mind going through the trouble of importing from 3DS and
other formats, www.3dcafe.com has a very large number of free objects.

Yesterday I was toying around with Wings3D just to check it out how much
does it take to replicate the Wings3D logo. I am not an experienced Wings3D
modeler, but as far as I know it is nothing to do with patch modeling. I
would rather say that it is mesh subdivision-based modeller.

I agree with this; I brought up Wings3D and found it impossible to do
what I could do in Hamapatch. But so many people love it, I just figured
I didn't spend enough time exploring the tool and/or did not understand
how to use it properly. This still may be true -- but from what I've
seen, my brain can get around HamaPatch a lot easier than Wings3D.

I was out of the CG business a couple of years, now I am back and found the
modelling philosophy applied by Wing3D creators, quite novel to me. It is my
impression that before Wings3D, it was very common for 3D packages, to use
CAD-like approach and POVRay is no exception here (though GUI-less).
Modelling in Wings3D is quite intuitive and different (revolutionary?), as
the vast amount of the modelling work is ceded to the machine.
In a nutshell, all you have to do is to define coarse (sometimes veeery
coarse) contours of what you need to make, then define edges which need to
stay "hard" (as they dramatically affect what you would get in the next
step) and finally apply "smoothing". In the hands of well trained modeller
it could be a powerful tool. Believe me, it is worth to try! I like very
much feature selecting commands (edge select, select similar, saving
selections) as selecting features always used to annoy me.
And, as always, the help file and tutorials are very useful and should be
looked at first.

Respectfully yours

Matt

I don't mean to turn this into an advocacy thread when what you really want
is place-settings, but I'd like to join Matt in strongly endorsing Wings3D.
It's a different beast to be sure, but very capable.

Cheers,

They are definitely two completely different approaches.

I have used Hamapatch for a couple of years and my initial experiments with
Wings3d weren't too impressive. But I spent the whole last IRTC round
making myself learn Wings, and now I can't give it up.

Somethings are still easier & faster in Hamapatch, but Wings does others the
same way. They compliment each other well.

Exactly! If you approach polymodelling like it is just a variation
on "patch modelling" you will be very frustrated.

Okay *gulp* but I'm not sure if my brain can handle Wings3D. It boggled
my mind last time. I'll take the time, though; nobody has ever steered
me wrong on these groups yet! :-)
