The isosurface is derived from an image_map pigment based function. 
Turbulence helps hide the creases and provides extra detail ala 
http://3dgallery.dhs.org/tutorials/iso_tutor.html.

For some reason I find the lighting in the image not very hospitable (at 
least on my monitor). Sure there is green grass and water, but I would 
not want to hang out there.

Awesome! If you want to adjust your lighting, you can use the assumed_gamma
setting in a global_settings block. Also, a parallel light pointing down
with a sky color (rgb <0.6, 0.8, 1> works good) might also help with the
lighting.

i'm trying to remember where my camping gear is !

the sky reminds me in some way of a space sky view, a very high altitude 
sky??
too much purple???
some clouds, a couple of moons maybe, green sun??

The sky seems a tad too purple. Other than that, you might consider 
smoothing out the turbulence near the altitude of the water, and maybe 
adding some rougher vegetation (flowers, bushes, trees), especially in 
the foreground, if you have the RAM and patience. Might make the scene 
feel a little more "natural".
