This is my current project. It's going to be (eventually) 
a 1930's style Formula 1 car. I'm basing the basic dimensions
off a 1934 Mercedes Benz W25. I decided to tackle the tires first,
as they given a sense of the basic dimensions, plus I knew they'ed 
be a challenge. I'm quite happy with the way they look, not so
happy with the render times. I'm doing a very complex difference of
a torus (see attached file), and it takes rather a long time. The basic
render of a single tire with basic AA takes almost 4 minutes on my
Athlon 950.

They look real! If the rest of that car matches the quality, it will be a
quite a poster!

That's my next problem. I've got to figure out how the hell I'm going to
do the body on this thing. I tried blobs, but the result was, to....
Weinermobile.

Anyone know of a good mesh/UV editor for Linux?

ppModeler or Art of Illusion come to mind.

AoI is a complete modeler/rendering system written
in Java, but can export to POV as well IIRC.

Looks great!
I haven't looked at the source file, but perhaps by using clipped_by you
could only do the intersection on a little part of the torus and then do a
#while loop and copy it around. I often prefer doing it a harder way and
getting faster render times, than the other way around.

Told you ;-) With Wings3D and POV-Ray you can do anything! Visit the Wings3D
forum for tips and tricks. Some people do amazing things with it.

Hrrm - One issue I'm running into. When I export a model to POV-Ray, I get
really WEIRD shading that doesn't match the shape at all.

Can you show a small example?

Are you using the plugin?

I typically export to .obj and convert with Poseray.
